Aurora (AURORA) is up 457% in a week, but it is 40% off Tuesday's high and 99.8% below its peak

The token on NEAR went from about 1.5 cents to 9.7 cents in four days, with most of the move on Monday and Tuesday. We looked for a listing, upgrade or deal behind it and could not find one.

Aurora's AURORA token is up 457% over the past seven days, the largest weekly gain of any coin in the top 1,000 by market value on our movers board this morning. It traded near $0.083 at about 7:40 AM New York time on Wednesday. A week ago it was about $0.015.

Most of the move came in two sessions. On Coinbase, the busiest market for the token, AURORA opened Monday (UTC) at $0.0206 and closed at $0.0580. It opened Tuesday at $0.0580, touched $0.138 and closed at $0.0973. At Wednesday morning's price it is about 40% below that Tuesday high, even though it is still up about 31% over 24 hours.

Look at the one-year line. A 457% week leaves AURORA up less than 9% on the year. That is because it spent most of the past twelve months falling. It hit its all-time low of $0.01455 on 15 August, just five weeks ago. This week's rally mostly takes the price back to where it was a year ago. Someone who bought at the January 2022 peak is still down 99.8%.

How much is trading, and where

AURORA's market value is about $61.6 million, and about $36.6 million of it traded in the past 24 hours. That is a churn ratio of about 0.59: well over half the token's total value changed hands in one day. That is below the level where daily trading exceeds the whole market value, but it is a big change for this token. In early September AURORA traded around $0.2 million a day on a market value of roughly $12 million, which is under 2%.

Coinbase alone handled about $13.8 million of the day's volume, well ahead of Bybit, KuCoin and Gate at under $5 million each. When a token worth $60 million starts trading this much, the price is being set mostly by short-term traders swapping it among themselves. A price set that way can reverse as fast as it rose, and the 40% drop from Tuesday's high shows that has already happened once this week.

What we could not find

We looked for a cause and could not confirm one. We checked Aurora Labs' own blog, which has no new post, along with CoinDesk and Cointelegraph. Neither had an Aurora story. We also found no exchange listing, protocol upgrade, funding round or partnership dated to Monday or Tuesday. Coinbase was already listing the token, with trading on its order book well before the move.

The one market note we found, an automated flash from exchange KuCoin on Tuesday, also names no specific trigger. It points to a broad rebound in altcoins. It says an integration Aurora announced on 13 August came more than a month too early to explain the jump.

One piece of context we could verify is that Aurora runs on the NEAR blockchain, and NEAR's own token is up about 86% over the past seven days, according to CoinGecko. We cannot show that NEAR's rally caused AURORA's. The two moves overlap, but AURORA's is about five times larger. Anyone who tells you confidently why AURORA went up 457% this week is going beyond the evidence we could find.

What Aurora is

Aurora is an Ethereum-compatible network built on NEAR. It lets apps written for Ethereum run on NEAR's infrastructure. The AURORA token peaked at $35.40 in January 2022 and has been below a dollar for most of its history since then. About 738 million of the roughly 1 billion tokens are in circulation.

How to read a move like this

  • Read the whole table. The same token shows +457% for the week, +9% for the year and −99.8% from its high. Each of those numbers alone gives a false picture.
  • Compare today's volume with a normal day. A token that usually trades 2% of its value a day and now trades 59% has a new kind of buyer, and those buyers tend to be short-term.
  • Measure from the high as well as from the low. The price is up fivefold on the week and down 40% since Tuesday afternoon. Both are true.
  • If nobody can name a cause, note that. A rally with no event behind it has nothing specific holding it up.
