The Company Chronicle covers America's independent, locally-owned businesses: the people and histories behind them, and what millions of business listings say, taken together, about how American business is organized.

• Company profiles and founder interviews. Stories about specific businesses, written with the people who run them.

Editorial standards

These are the rules we hold ourselves to. They apply to every story, sponsored or not.

• Nothing invented. We do not make up companies, people, quotes, interviews, events, customer counts, testimonials or reviews. If we cannot check it, we leave it out or attribute it clearly.
• News from the source. We report from primary sources whenever they exist: Federal Reserve statements, government data releases, Treasury and mortgage-rate data, company filings and press releases. When we rely on other outlets' reporting, we attribute it and link to it, and we write every story in our own words.
• How we work. Our newsroom uses software, including AI tools, to monitor sources, gather data and draft stories. Every figure must trace to a source linked in the story, and we publish nothing we can't source.
• Information, not advice. We explain what's happening in markets and why. We don't tell readers to buy or sell anything.
• Numbers come from data. Every figure in a data story is calculated from the listings database, not estimated or copied from a press release. Where the data cannot tell us why something is true, we say so.
• Company stories start with the company. We publish a profile or interview only after a real owner or authorized representative has shared their story with us, and they approve the final draft.
• Sponsored means labeled. Paid features carry a "Sponsored" label everywhere they appear. Payment buys a scheduled story, never different facts.
• Fair to the businesses we cover. Our data stories describe patterns, not individual companies, and we do not single out businesses for criticism.
• Corrections. If we get something wrong, we fix it and note the change. For a listing on CheckThisBiz, use its corrections form.

About the data

Listing data comes from the Overture Maps Foundation places dataset, used under the Community Data License Agreement, Permissive 2.0. Overture combines several contributed sources. A listing tells us a business was recorded at a place with certain details. It does not tell us revenue, employee counts or how long a business has existed, and we do not pretend it does. The database excludes national chains and franchises, so every number in our data stories describes independent, locally-owned businesses only.
