Patriots vs Jaguars: Jacksonville wins 35-6 as Drake Maye throws two more picks, now six in three games

The Jacksonville Jaguars beat the New England Patriots 35-6 on Sunday at EverBank Stadium, and "Patriots vs Jaguars" is one of the most-searched phrases in the US today. Trevor Lawrence threw three touchdown passes, Jacksonville moved to 2-1, and New England fell to 1-2 as Drake Maye's early-season slide got worse.

Maye went 14 of 25 for 199 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions, and lost one of two fumbles, according to the ESPN box score. He was pulled in the fourth quarter for Tommy DeVito, the Associated Press recap reported. That puts him at one touchdown pass and six interceptions through three games. Last season, as the Patriots won the AFC, he threw 31 touchdowns and eight interceptions over the full year.

The yardage was even. The scoreboard was not.

A 29-point margin reads like one team was pushed around for 60 minutes. The stat sheet says otherwise. New England outgained Jacksonville 317 yards to 315 and threw for more, 234 to 178. Both teams ran 60 plays and had 10 drives. What separated them:

Jacksonville scored a touchdown on every trip inside the 20. New England got inside it three times without a touchdown, and its only points all day were two Andy Borregales field goals, from 35 and 40 yards. The AP listed the self-inflicted damage: a missed 38-yard field goal, a kick returner stepping out of bounds, and a taunting flag on Mack Hollins that turned a fourth-and-1 into a field goal try. Maye's third-and-goal throw into coverage became Travis Hunter's first career interception, and another pick, to Jarrian Jones, set up a Jaguars score.

That matters for how to read the result. The Patriots' problem on Sunday was not an inability to move the ball. It was finishing drives and holding onto it, which is also the story of Maye's season so far.

How the scoring went

Per the ESPN scoring summary, Lawrence hit Josh Cameron for 12 yards early in the second quarter, and after a Borregales field goal made it 7-3, found Jakobi Meyers for 10 yards to make it 14-3 at the half. In the last 68 seconds of the third quarter Jacksonville scored twice: a 17-yard fingertip catch by Parker Washington and a 5-yard Chris Rodriguez Jr. run, for 28-3. Bhayshul Tuten's 1-yard run closed it at 35-6.

Lawrence finished 19 of 29 for 182 yards, three touchdowns and an interception on a tipped pass. Meyers, facing his former team, caught seven passes for 64 yards, and Tuten ran 15 times for 73. For New England, Hollins caught six for 87 yards, and the Patriots ran for just 3.2 yards a carry.

Two moments are also driving searches. Late in the game Lawrence broke clear on a third down at the New England 16 and took a knee short of the goal line to run clock, with more than eight minutes left; Tuten scored on the next play. "In hindsight, I probably should've just scored," Lawrence told CBS Sports. And just before halftime, Cam Little, who already holds the NFL record at 68 yards, missed a 70-yard field goal by inches, CBS Sports reported. It was only the ninth 70-yard attempt in league history.

Against the line

Jacksonville closed as a 3-point favorite with a total of 46.5, according to the DraftKings line shown by ESPN. The Jaguars won by 29, and the 41 combined points came in well under the total.

What it means for both teams

The AP noted the win was Jacksonville's sixth straight regular-season home win, and Liam Coen became the first coach since Matt LaFleur in 2020 to win 15 of his first 20 games. The Jaguars play at Cincinnati next Sunday.

New England's next game is harder. The Patriots go to Buffalo on Oct. 4, and the Bills are 3-0 after beating the Chargers 24-16 on Sunday. A loss would leave New England two games behind in the AFC East before October is a week old. CBS Sports laid out the context around Maye: A.J. Brown's absence, the loss of guard Mike Onwenu, and a 43.5% pressure rate going into this game, per PFF. Coach Mike Vrabel's view after the game, per the AP: "If it's not there, I think sometimes you can want it too badly, and we can't force it."
