Steel floor joists: procurement questions

Steel floor joists look simple on a quote but depend on span, loads, bearing, bridging and subfloor choices. Ask these questions before you commit to a joist package.

A floor joist package is defined by span, spacing, loading and the deflection limit the designer sets, plus the bridging, rim and connection details that make the joists work as a floor. When you request a quote for steel floor joists, ask the supplier to state each of these assumptions so you can check them against the engineer's design. The general buying context is in the floor joists procurement guide; the term is defined in the glossary.

Give the supplier a complete brief

  • Floor plan with bearing lines, spans and openings (stairs, shafts, penetrations).
  • Intended use of each area (residential rooms, balconies, terraces, bathrooms with tiled floors, commercial or hospitality use).
  • Floor build-up planned above: subfloor, screed or topping, finishes, and any heavy items such as stone or planters.
  • Services routing, since holes in joist webs need the engineer's agreement.

Heavier finishes and wet areas are the most common reason a quote needs revising after the first round.

What the supplier should state

ItemWhy it matters
Joist section, steel thickness and gradeMust match the structural drawings
SpacingAffects subfloor choice and fastening
Design loads and deflection limitConfirm with the engineer of record
Web openings and hole rulesServices cannot be cut freely through joists
Bearing length and web stiffenersPrevents local failure at supports
Bridging, blocking, rim trackNeeded for stability; check if included

Bearing and supports

Joists bear on walls, beams or foundations, and each bearing needs a defined connection. Ask who designs the joist-to-wall and joist-to-beam connections, and whether anchors or clips are in the package. If the joists sit on a concrete or masonry base, tolerances matter; see foundation interfaces. For connection hardware, the connection clips guide and anchors guide list what to ask.

Corrosion, moisture and exposure

Floors over crawl spaces, open undercrofts or in humid and coastal conditions face different exposure than interior upper floors. Ask the engineer what coating and detailing the site needs, and whether the joist ends need extra protection. The humid climate planning guide gives a wider checklist.

Subfloor and acoustic questions

  1. Which subfloor board or deck is specified and who supplies and fixes it?
  2. Is a topping or underlay planned for acoustic or fire reasons? Check requirements via the fire-rated assemblies checklist and acoustic guide.
  3. Are fixings compatible with steel joists, and are quantities included?

Delivery, labelling and handling

Ask for bundles labelled to match the layout drawing, the maximum joist length your route can carry, the delivery sequence by floor and storage instructions. Inspect on arrival for bends, twists and coating damage and log issues with the damage record template.

Documentation to keep

File the joist layout, section schedule, connection details, material documentation and the date of the design version that was released for production. Confirm structural suitability with the engineer of record and the local authority, not with the quotation alone.

Questions people ask

What controls the joist size?

Span, spacing, loads and allowable deflection, as set by the engineer of record. Ask the supplier to show the assumptions.

Do joists include bridging and blocking?

Not always. Ask for a written list of bridging, blocking and rim members in scope.

Is vibration a concern?

Floor feel can be influenced by span and stiffness. Ask the engineer whether a serviceability check is needed for your use.

What goes on top of the joists?

A subfloor system chosen with the designer. Confirm who supplies and fixes it.
