Cowboys vs Texans: Dallas rallies for a 34-30 win as CeeDee Lamb catches 17 passes for 189 yards

Houston gained as many yards as Dallas and averaged 7.6 a play, and is still 0-4. Thirteen penalties, a 33-minute clock for the Cowboys and a 21-target day for Lamb explain the gap.

The Dallas Cowboys beat the Houston Texans 34-30 on Sunday after trailing 16-6 at halftime, and "Cowboys vs Texans" is the most-searched game phrase in the US today. Dallas moves to 2-2. Houston falls to 0-4, according to the ESPN box score. ESPN's game recap credits CeeDee Lamb's 12-yard touchdown catch from Dak Prescott, with 40 seconds left, as the winning score.

The yardage was a dead heat, so the game turned on volume and discipline. Houston was far more efficient per snap but ran 21 fewer plays. Dallas ran 25 rushes and 45 passes and held the ball for almost seven minutes longer. Neither side lost the ball, which removes the usual explanation. What is left is that Houston's 13 penalties cost it 90 yards, and Dallas had 28 first downs to Houston's 16, four of them by penalty against none for Houston.

The Lamb game

Lamb was targeted 21 times and caught 17 of them for 189 yards and a touchdown, by far the largest share of Prescott's work. Prescott finished 32 of 45 for 335 yards with one touchdown, no interceptions and three sacks. George Pickens had two catches for 75 yards, including a 53-yarder. Javonte Williams did the scoring on the ground, with rushing touchdowns of 8, 1 and 2 yards, though he needed 19 carries to gain 62 yards. Brandon Aubrey made two of his four field goal attempts, from 39 and 50 yards, and KaVontae Turpin returned five kickoffs for 147 yards.

How Houston led and then did not

C.J. Stroud completed 21 of 31 for 347 yards and two touchdowns, both to Nico Collins, who finished with seven catches for 118 yards. Ka'imi Fairbairn made all three field goals, including a 54-yarder as the first half ended. Collins' 7-yard touchdown opened the scoring, and Houston led 16-6 at the break. After halftime Dallas outscored the Texans 28-14, with 14 points in each of the third and fourth quarters. Houston's run game produced little: 19 carries for 62 yards, with David Montgomery at 10 for 24. Woody Marks scored the 6-yard touchdown that put Houston ahead 30-27 with 2:23 left. That lead lasted 1 minute 43 seconds.

What it changes

Dallas leaves with a win built largely on feeding one receiver. Houston has now lost four straight to start the year, though this one came from penalties and snap count rather than from being outplayed.
