Eagles lose 27-7 to the Bears as third-string QB Case Keenum throws two touchdowns on Monday night

The Chicago Bears beat the Philadelphia Eagles 27-7 on Monday Night Football at Soldier Field, and they did it with their third-string quarterback. Case Keenum, starting in place of the injured Caleb Williams, went 24 of 34 for 247 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions, and added a 1-yard touchdown run late. Both teams are now 2-1.

That is why "Eagles" is the most searched term in the United States today, with more than a million Google searches in 24 hours. Here is what actually happened and what it means.

How the game went

Chicago scored on its first drive, a Keenum shovel pass to Luther Burden III for 8 yards, and added a 29-yard Cairo Santos field goal to lead 10-0. Jalen Hurts answered with a 1-yard sneak as the first half expired, which turned out to be Philadelphia's only points. After halftime the Bears added a 48-yard field goal, a 41-yard touchdown from Keenum to a wide-open Kalif Raymond, and Keenum's own 1-yard run with 7:19 left to finish it, according to ESPN's scoring summary.

It was Keenum's first game action since a start for Houston on December 24, 2023, the Associated Press reported. Williams missed the game with the right hamstring injury he suffered in the 9-3 loss to Minnesota eight days earlier.

The yardage gap is not as wide as the score. Philadelphia actually averaged more per rush, 5.6 yards to Chicago's 3.7, and Saquon Barkley ran 15 times for 82 yards. The Eagles just ran only 47 plays to Chicago's 69, and they gained only 62 of their 248 yards after halftime, per AP. The three turnovers and the 10 penalties are the game. Philadelphia has now gone three straight games to open the season without a single takeaway.

The Hurts hit, the Dalton interception and Sirianni

The swing came midway through the second quarter. Trailing 7-0 and driving, Hurts scrambled toward the sideline and was hit by linebacker D'Marco Jackson, who was flagged for a late hit. Hurts was pulled for a concussion check. While he was out, backup Andy Dalton threw an interception to rookie Dillon Thieneman in the back of the end zone, with 6:14 left in the half. Hurts said afterward that he felt fine and was waiting to be cleared when the turnover happened.

Cameras caught Eagles coach Nick Sirianni shouting an expletive at Jackson after the hit. CBS Sports reported that Sirianni said after the game he felt remorse for letting his emotions get the better of him, and acknowledged the hit was closer than it looked live. Replays showed Jackson made contact as Hurts' foot touched the sideline.

Sirianni also second-guessed a punt. Down 20-7 in the third quarter, the Eagles lined up to go for it on fourth-and-1 at their own 49, failed to draw Chicago offside, took a delay of game and punted. "I feel like I should have went for it on that fourth-and-1 1/2," he said, per AP. On their next fourth down, a fourth-and-5 at the Chicago 46, Hurts was intercepted by T.J. Edwards. Hurts finished 16 of 25 for 153 yards with one interception.

What the market got wrong

Philadelphia went in as a 3-point road favorite with a total of 42.5 points, on the DraftKings line shown by ESPN. The Bears won outright by 20 and the teams combined for 34 points, well under the total. The price assumed Chicago's offense would sputter without Williams. It was Philadelphia's that did.

What it changes

Nothing in the standings is settled after three weeks, but the questions have shifted. For Philadelphia, it is a turnover problem on both sides of the ball, and an offense that stalled once Chicago adjusted at halftime. For Chicago, Keenum's night buys time for Williams' hamstring rather than forcing him back early. The Bears also lost left tackle Braxton Jones to a knee injury in the third quarter, per AP, which is the injury to watch this week.
