Gypsum boards buying guide
Gypsum boards vary by core, facing and rating. Choose by location and performance: standard, moisture resistant, fire rated, impact resistant or exterior types.
Gypsum board is chosen by where it goes and what it must do. Specify type (standard, fire rated, moisture resistant, impact resistant, exterior glass-mat), thickness, edge profile, size, and the finish level the finishing trade will achieve.
Board types
| Type | Used for | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | Dry interior walls and ceilings | The base product |
| Fire-rated (Type X, Type C and similar) | Rated assemblies | Rating depends on the tested system, including framing and fasteners |
| Moisture and mold resistant | Humid interior zones | Not a wet-area substrate |
| Impact and abuse resistant | Corridors, schools | Harder face or core |
| Exterior glass-mat sheathing | Behind cladding | Exposure limits before cladding |
| Acoustic or sound-rated boards | Quiet partitions | Often part of a multi-layer assembly |
| Lightweight | Easier handling | Compare screw holding and finish |
Check the Gypsum Association and the listing directories for approved assemblies.
Specification lines
- Board type, thickness, width, length.
- Edge: tapered, square, or other.
- Fire rating or assembly number from the drawings.
- Fastener type and spacing.
- Finish level for the project (levels run from no finish to a full skim coat).
- Special ordering: lengths to reduce butt joints.
Assemblies matter more than boards
Fire and sound performance come from a listed assembly: framing, board layers, joint treatment, insulation and penetrations. Substituting one element can invalidate the listing. The assembly number on the drawings is the reference to follow; confirm changes with the engineer of record or fire protection designer and the local authority.
Storage and handling
- Store flat on pallets or evenly supported, indoors and dry.
- Keep away from direct moisture and avoid edge damage.
- Condition the building, especially temperature and humidity, before finishing.
Common mistakes
- Using moisture resistant board in showers.
- Mixing board types in a rated wall without documentation.
- Ordering short lengths that create extra seams.
General education only.
Questions people ask
What does Type X mean?
It is a designation for fire-rated gypsum board used in rated assemblies. The rating belongs to the tested assembly, not the board alone.
Is "green board" waterproof?
No. Moisture resistant boards tolerate humidity better than standard board but are not waterproof. Use backer board for wet surfaces.
What thickness do I need?
It depends on the framing spacing, the assembly design, and fire or acoustic requirements.
Are all boards usable on steel framing?
Yes in general, but fasteners differ. Follow the assembly instructions.
