How to compare supplier warranties
Compare supplier warranties on what is covered, for how long, who can claim, what voids them and how a claim actually works, not on the headline duration alone.
To compare supplier warranties, put each one in the same table and compare eight things: what is covered, the term, the start date, who may claim, the remedy, exclusions, conditions on installation and care, and the claim process. A headline such as "10 years" tells you almost nothing until those eight are filled in.
Get the real document first
Marketing pages and quotations summarize. The binding text is the warranty document itself, often a separate PDF. Ask each supplier for the full warranty, in the language and governing law you will rely on, before you compare prices. If a supplier cannot provide the document, treat the warranty as unconfirmed.
The eight comparison points
- Scope. Does it cover product defects only, or also performance such as coating adhesion, color change or leaks? Is labor included or just the replacement product?
- Term. The stated length, and whether it is stepped (full cover early, reduced later).
- Start date. From delivery, installation or practical completion. A warranty starting at shipment shortens real cover when installation is months away.
- Who can claim. Named purchaser only, or transferable to a later owner. Matters if you plan to sell or refinance.
- Remedy. Repair, replace or refund? At whose cost is removal and reinstallation?
- Exclusions. Typical ones include misuse, accidents, normal wear, environmental extremes, and damage in transit. Check whether your site conditions, such as coastal or high-humidity air, fall into an exclusion.
- Conditions. Required installers, required maintenance, record keeping, notice periods.
- Claim process. Where to send a claim, what proof is needed, response times if stated, and any cap on liability.

Fill it in from the documents, not from sales conversations. Where a supplier is silent, write "not stated" rather than assuming.
Warranty is not the same as test evidence
A warranty is a commercial promise. Test reports and certifications are technical evidence that a product meets a standard. They answer different questions and you usually want both. Standards bodies such as ASTM and ISO publish the methods behind many test reports, but whether a particular report is relevant to your project is a question for your designer and engineer of record. Keep both in your product documentation file.
Warranty chain on a real project
Several parties may each give a warranty on one wall: the manufacturer of the panel, the supplier who sold it, the installer who fixed it and the contractor who delivered the building. Map the chain. If the owner buys materials directly, the contractor may exclude them, as discussed in the owner-supplied checklist. Make sure no gap exists between the supplier warranty and the installer warranty where each blames the other.
Questions to put to each supplier
- Can we see a sample claim form and the steps after submission?
- Does the warranty survive if the installer is not one you approved?
- What is the stated treatment of climate or site conditions like salt air, heat or humidity?
- Is the issuing entity the manufacturer or a distributor, and where is it registered?
- Is there any cap on total liability, and is it lower than the product cost?
Fold warranty into the buying decision
Include warranty terms as a scored line in your quote comparison. The quotation comparison guide and the supplier due diligence checklist show where it fits. Put the agreed warranty in the purchase order or attach it, following the purchase order checklist. For any legal interpretation of warranty wording, ask a lawyer; this page is general education.
Questions people ask
Is a longer warranty always better?
No. A long warranty with narrow coverage, heavy exclusions or hard claim conditions can be worth less than a shorter, clearer one.
Does the supplier warranty replace the contractor warranty?
No. They are separate promises from different parties. Check how the construction contract treats materials the contractor did not supply.
What commonly voids a warranty?
Installation outside manufacturer instructions, unsuitable environments, missing maintenance and unapproved modifications are common clauses. Read the actual terms.
Who can make a claim?
Some warranties are limited to the original purchaser. Confirm whether the owner, a later buyer or only the named purchaser can claim.
