Light steel frame buyer guides

Light steel frame fire performance: what to ask for

Fire performance of a steel-framed building depends on the whole assembly, not the studs alone. A buyer checklist of the documents to request, and what the Digital Oro catalog does and does not state.

Buyers often ask whether a light steel frame is "fire rated". The honest answer is that a rating is earned by a complete assembly under a recognized test, and it is recorded in a report or listing. This guide sets out what to ask for. For the basics of how fire protection works in buildings, see fire safety in buildings: the basics.

What the catalog says, and what it does not

The Digital Oro International catalog describes its frame as AS1397 G550 AZ150 light steel in 0.75 or 0.95 mm, zinc-aluminum plated at more than 150 g/m2. It credits the aluminum content with corrosion and heat resistance. That is a statement about the coating. The catalog does not give a fire-resistance rating, and no rating should be assumed from it.

What to request

  • The fire-test report or listing for the exact wall, floor and roof assemblies you intend to build, including lining type and thickness.
  • The required rating for each element from your code review, in writing.
  • Details for penetrations, joints and fire-stopping, which are where assemblies often fail in practice.
  • Which standard the assembly was tested to, and whether it is accepted where you build.
  • The engineer of record's sign-off that the as-built assembly matches the tested one.

Our fire-rated assemblies documentation checklist goes deeper on the paperwork.

Where Digital Oro fits

Digital Oro International lists a light steel frame as the first category of its material catalog: AS1397 G550 AZ150 steel in 0.75 or 0.95 mm, zinc-aluminum plated at more than 150 g/m2, offered in Australian and American standards, with wall frames, roof trusses and sub-floor options. See the light steel frame catalog map or all ten categories. Prices, lead times and project-specific engineering come from Digital Oro in a quotation; contact Digital Oro with your project.

Questions people ask

Does steel burn, so is fire rating automatic?

Steel does not burn, but a fire rating belongs to a tested assembly (framing, linings, insulation, fixings), not to a single component. Ask for the test report or listing for the exact assembly.

Does the Digital Oro catalog state a fire rating for its frame?

No. The catalog describes the frame material and coating and does not give a fire-resistance rating. Request assembly documentation from Digital Oro for your project.

Who decides the required rating?

The local building code and the authority having jurisdiction, with your engineer or architect. It depends on use, height and distance to the boundary.
