Mineral wool insulation buying guide

Mineral wool insulation is made from stone or slag fibers. Compare density, form, thermal data, fire and sound performance, and moisture handling before you buy.

Mineral wool insulation is made by spinning molten rock or slag into fibers. Compare products by form (batt, board, loose fill), density, declared thermal resistance, fire and acoustic data, and the moisture and installation guidance for your assembly.

Forms and uses

FormUseCompare
BattsBetween wood or steel studs and joistsWidth, depth, and thermal resistance per thickness
Semi-rigid boardsCavity walls, rainscreen wallsDensity, facings, compressive strength
Rigid boardsRoofs, continuous insulationCompressive strength, dimensional stability

Density and thickness drive both thermal and acoustic behavior, so do not compare products by thickness alone.

Specification lines

  • Product form and size.
  • Declared thermal resistance and the test standard behind it. ASTM publishes the common methods.
  • Density, where relevant to acoustic or compressive loads.
  • Fire documentation: reaction to fire and listed assemblies.
  • Facings and vapor control relationship.
  • Packaging and compression: batts are often compressed for shipping.

Where it fits well

Because it is noncombustible in many classifications and is dense, mineral wool shows up in fire-rated partitions, firestopping details, sound-rated walls, and exterior continuous insulation behind cladding. Whether it is suitable for your assembly depends on the design and the approvals the product holds.

Handling

  • Store dry and covered; keep wrappers intact.
  • Use dust masks, gloves and eye protection per the safety data sheet.
  • Cut with a serrated knife or saw and avoid compressing.
  • Do not leave insulation exposed to rain before enclosure.

Common mistakes

  • Comparing thermal values from different test methods.
  • Leaving gaps at plumbing and wiring.
  • Assuming one product fits every fire-rated assembly.

General education only. Confirm with the design team and the local authority.

Questions people ask

Is mineral wool the same as rock wool?

Rock wool, stone wool and slag wool are related terms. Ask the manufacturer what the material is made from.

Does it resist fire?

It is commonly used in fire-rated assemblies, but the rating belongs to the tested assembly. Confirm in the listing.

Does it absorb water?

Many products repel liquid water but still need the assembly to manage moisture. Read the product literature.

Batts or boards?

Batts fit between studs. Boards suit continuous insulation, exterior wall and roof uses.
