General construction: DIY and owner-builder

Renting construction equipment: a checklist

Renting gives you specialist tools without owning them, but only if you check the machine, the terms and your own competence before you take it.

A rented machine is new to you, even if it is old to the yard. Treat the pick-up as an inspection.

Choose the right machine

Describe the job to the rental staff and ask what they recommend. A machine that is too small wastes time and one that is too big is hard to control.

Inspect at pick-up

  • Guards present, cords undamaged, controls working.
  • Fuel, blades, bits or attachments as needed.
  • Photos of existing damage, so you are not charged for it.

Read the terms

Check the rental period, late charges, cleaning requirements, damage terms and any deposit.

Operate safely

Get a demonstration, read the manual and use the protective gear it recommends. Do not operate heavy machines or work at height without competence.

Return

Clean it, return it on time and keep the receipt.

Always check the project drawings and specification, and confirm requirements with the engineer of record and the local authority.

Quick answers

  • What should I check before leaving the rental yard? Condition, guards, controls, cords, attachments and that you have the right accessories and protective equipment.
  • Who is responsible for damage? Check the rental agreement. Ask about damage waivers, insurance and what is excluded.
  • Do I need training? For many machines, yes. Ask for a demonstration and read the manual.
  • What if I need it longer? Ask about extension terms in advance so work does not stop while you wait.
