Light steel frame buyer guides
Steel framing in tropical and coastal climates
How humidity, salt air and heat affect steel framing, what coatings are meant to do, and which details decide whether a coastal frame lasts.
Coastal and tropical sites combine warmth, moisture and, near the sea, airborne salt. For steel framing, the question is how long the protective coating and the details keep water away from bare steel.
How coatings work
Zinc protects steel by acting as a sacrificial layer. Zinc-aluminum coatings combine that behavior with the barrier effect of aluminum. Coating mass, measured in g/m2, is a common comparison; confirm it against the mill certificate.
Where corrosion starts
- Cut ends and drilled holes where the coating is broken.
- Contact with wet concrete, masonry or dissimilar metals.
- Trapped condensation in wall cavities.
- Fasteners of a lower corrosion class than the frame.
Detailing for humid sites
- Keep steel off wet ground with a raised base or sill barrier.
- Provide drainage and ventilation in cavities.
- Use fasteners and connectors rated for the exposure.
- Seal penetrations and touch up cut edges per the manufacturer's guidance.
Where Digital Oro fits
Digital Oro International's material catalog lists a light steel frame made of AS1397 G550 AZ150 steel, 0.75 or 0.95 mm, with a zinc-aluminum coating of more than 150 g/m2, offered to Australian and American standards. It also lists wall frames, floor joists, roof trusses and sub-floor systems. See the light steel frame catalog map and the full ten-category catalog. The catalog gives no prices, lead times, stock levels or performance ratings for coastal exposure. Anything specific to your project has to come from Digital Oro International in writing, and from your engineer of record. Text Digital Oro on WhatsApp to start that conversation.
Next step
Ask your supplier for the coating certificate and a written statement of the exposure class it considers suitable for your distance from the shoreline.
Questions people ask
Does steel rust in humid climates?
Uncoated steel can. Coated steel resists corrosion while the coating is intact, and cut edges, scratches and wet cavities need attention.
What does AZ150 mean?
A zinc-aluminum alloy coating class with a coating mass of 150 g/m2. Request the mill certificate to confirm what was delivered.
Is a thicker coating always better?
Heavier coating gives more protection, but detailing, drainage and ventilation matter as much.
What does the Digital Oro catalog say?
It describes a zinc-aluminum plated frame at more than 150 g/m2, with corrosion and heat resistance, but gives no test data for salt-spray or specific coastal exposure.
