Axon stock plunges 17% to a two-year low as $130 million of federal drone deals slip out of 2026

Record third-quarter revenue of $909 million was not enough: Axon cut its full-year growth outlook to about 30% because three large Dedrone deployments will not land this year, even as it announced a $1.2 billion Skydio investment.

Axon Enterprise, the maker of the TASER and police body cameras, was trading at about $316.48 at 12:26 PM ET Friday, down $66.08 or 17.27% from Thursday's close of $382.56, according to Nasdaq.com quote data. That is below the bottom of its 52-week range ($339.01 to $665.06) and gives the company a market value of about $25.7 billion. Volume was about 2.8 million shares against an average near 969,000.

The cause is in the company's own 8-K earnings release, filed Thursday: a lower full-year outlook, driven by federal deals that slipped.

What the quarter actually said

Third quarter 2026Figure
Revenue$909 million, up 28% year over year
Software Services revenue$437 million, up 43%
Connected Devices revenue$472 million, up 16%
Platform Solutions revenue$125 million, up 106%
Adjusted EBITDA$236 million, up 33%
Net income$57 million ($0.68 diluted), against a $2.2 million loss a year earlier

By most measures that is a strong quarter. Axon says AI annual recurring revenue passed $100 million and new five-year bookings are up 25% year to date.

The number behind the number: $130 million

The damage is concentrated. Axon says three large federal Dedrone (airspace security) deployments, worth about $130 million of revenue, will no longer be recognized in 2026. One, about $30 million, had been expected in the third quarter. Two more, totaling about $100 million, had been expected in the fourth.

The company says that without them its full-year growth outlook would be nearly 500 basis points higher than the new guidance of roughly 30%, and about 200 basis points above its prior guidance. Our arithmetic on that statement: the prior outlook implied growth of roughly 33%, so the cut is about three percentage points of growth, not a collapse in demand. Fourth-quarter revenue is now guided to $990 million to $1.01 billion, with Adjusted EBITDA of $245 million to $250 million.

Compare the two figures. Roughly $5.4 billion of market value (the $66.08 drop times about 81 million shares, our estimate from the market cap) disappeared on about $130 million of delayed revenue. Markets are pricing more than the timing: a growth stock that has already fallen about 51% from its August 19 peak is being judged on whether federal buyers will keep signing on schedule.

Where the weakness sits

The release's product table shows TASER revenue of $233.0 million, down from $261.3 million in the second quarter and $238.0 million a year earlier, about a 2% decline year over year (our arithmetic). Growth is coming from software and the platform business, which is the part of Axon investors pay a higher multiple for, and that is why the federal software-adjacent slip matters.

The Skydio bet

Alongside the results, Axon announced a $1.2 billion investment in drone maker Skydio, lifting its fully diluted stake to 37%, plus exclusive U.S. and Canadian public safety distribution rights. Axon says Skydio expects about $1 billion of bookings this fiscal year and that revenue from the channel arrangement will be recognized on a net basis in Software Services. The investment equals about 4.7% of Axon's current market value, our arithmetic.

Who it hits

For a municipal police department or sheriff's office, nothing in the release changes what is on the shelf: Axon Body 5 and TASER Ion launched in October and the company cites state corrections and metro police contracts among its third-quarter wins. The delays are in federal deployments, not local orders. For traders, the open questions are the timing of the federal deals in 2027, and whether the Skydio stake adds to results or to risk.

Next catalyst: the fourth-quarter report, which Axon has not dated in the release.
