Bayer will build a $2.2 billion drug plant in Ohio: 600 jobs, about $3.7 million of capital per job, first output in 2031

The New Albany campus is part of Bayer's push to double US drug sales by the end of the decade. The near-term work is the 1,500 construction jobs; the finished plant will not make medicine for about five years.

Bayer said Friday it will spend $2.2 billion on a new pharmaceutical manufacturing campus in New Albany, Ohio, outside Columbus. The company expects about 600 permanent jobs at the site and about 1,500 construction jobs while it is built, according to Bayer's announcement.

The campus will be built in two modules. The first, for drug substance (the active ingredient), is due to start operating in 2031. The second, for finished drug product, is planned for 2034. Bayer says the site will serve its oncology, cardiovascular and kidney medicines.

Why Bayer is doing it

The plant is about where Bayer's sales are growing. Its prescription drug unit now gets 35% of its global revenue from the United States, up from 20% in 2018, and the company aims to double U.S. sales by the end of the decade, Reuters reported. Reuters named the kidney drug Kerendia, the prostate cancer drug Nubeqa and the experimental stroke-prevention drug asundexian as central to that plan. "It is a very deliberate decision to strengthen our presence in the United States," Sebastian Guth, chief operating officer of Bayer's pharmaceuticals division, told Reuters.

The announcement comes while the White House is pressing drugmakers to cut U.S. prices, Reuters noted. Bayer's release itself does not mention tariffs or any agreement with Washington. It says Bayer has spent more than $7 billion on U.S. pharma research and manufacturing over the past five years.

The numbers behind the headline

  • About $3.7 million per permanent job. $2.2 billion divided by 600 jobs. The ratio describes a plant that needs a lot of capital and few people, which is why the bigger local effect comes from building it rather than running it.
  • About nine years from announcement to full operation. The first module opens roughly five years from now and the second roughly eight years from now. Whatever the plant means for Bayer's U.S. supply, it won't affect results until the 2030s.
  • The incentives aren't final. Bayer says it will seek an Ohio Job Creation Tax Credit and JobsOhio assistance, with details to be released once agreements are signed. Separately, JobsOhio is putting up to $30 million into an Ohio Life Science Training Center opening in summer 2027, plus about $8 million from the city, the state and The New Albany Company.

Who it actually hits: Columbus-area contractors

Most of the money goes into concrete, steel, mechanical, electrical and process piping, and the 1,500 construction jobs are where it reaches local businesses. For a mechanical, electrical or plumbing contractor around Columbus, a pharmaceutical cleanroom job is large, slow to pay out and strict about qualifications.

The local pool is limited. CheckThisBiz lists 5,137 independent construction firms in Ohio, along with 1,472 HVAC contractors, 973 plumbers and 771 electrical contractors. In Columbus itself it lists 20,332 independent businesses, 228 of them contractors. For a subcontractor whose payroll grows ahead of the general contractor's payments, the cash gap usually matters more than the size of the contract. Our construction funding page explains how that gap is usually financed.

Restaurants, hotels and service businesses near the site get the construction crews first and the 600 permanent staff only from 2031.
