What moved
Bitcoin's 24-hour range on Coinbase ran from about $84,753 to $87,397, the eight-month high we covered in last night's story. It has since settled back toward $86,000. CoinDesk reported that the coin bounced from Asian-session lows around $85,000 as oil prices fell, after a Kyodo report that Iran was willing to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days if the U.S. eased its blockade. Cheaper oil matters to crypto because it eases inflation worries, which in turn weakens the case for more Fed rate increases. Our pre-market brief has the oil and futures picture.
Institutional money is the other support. U.S. spot bitcoin ETFs took in a net $998.95 million on Monday, CoinDesk reported, citing SoSoValue data. That was the biggest single day since October 6, 2025, and the ninth-largest on record. BlackRock's IBIT led with $381.37 million, followed by Ark's ARKB and Fidelity's FBTC. The number behind the headline is worth noting: even after that haul, CoinDesk says the funds are still down $450 million for the year, so September's inflows are repairing earlier outflows rather than adding to a surplus.
Smaller tokens did the running on Tuesday. Cointelegraph reported that total crypto market value briefly climbed back above $3 trillion, and that open interest in perpetual futures reached nearly $160 billion, its highest since late October 2025, according to Bloomberg. CoinDesk noted that memecoins such as DOGE, PEPE and SHIB were among the best performers, a sign of speculative appetite. More leverage in the system means a bigger crowd that can be forced out if prices turn, in either direction.
Stablecoin deal: Binance takes a Circle stake
Binance bought 1.24 million Circle Class A shares at $80.84 each, about $100 million, in a private placement that closed September 17, according to a Circle SEC filing reported by CoinDesk. The purchase comes with a five-year deal under which Binance promotes the USDC stablecoin and Circle pays it a monthly fee tied to USDC held through one of its wallet services. Binance cannot sell or hedge the shares for up to two years.
What traders are watching
- ETF flows for a fourth straight day of inflows.
- Open interest near $160 billion, which can amplify the next move up or down.
- Oil and the Hormuz talks, which have been driving risk appetite. See the crude oil chart.
