Tesla registrations jump 72.5% in Europe as car sales rise 10%; BYD nearly doubles

New car registrations across the EU, UK and EFTA rose 10.2% in September to 1.36 million, with battery-electric up nearly 60% and petrol and diesel falling, per ACEA data.

European car registrations rose 10.2% in September to 1.36 million, according to data from the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA) as reported by Investing.com. ACEA scheduled its September release for October 22. We read the figures through press coverage, not the ACEA release itself, and the region covered is the EU, UK and EFTA.

Electrified models lead

PowertrainSeptember change
Battery electricup nearly 60%
Plug-in hybridup 24%
Hybrid electricup 5.3%
Petroldown 20.6%
Dieseldown 28%

Year to date, hybrids hold the largest market share at 36.3%, followed by battery-electric at 22.7% and petrol at 21.2%.

Tesla and BYD

Tesla registrations rose 72.5% to 68,776 units, a rebound after months of weak results. BYD rose 98.4% to 49,953 units, the top seller among Chinese brands. Our own arithmetic, dividing each by the 1.36 million market total (which is rounded), puts Tesla near 5.1% of the month's registrations and BYD near 3.7%. Treat those as approximate, since the reports do not publish shares.

Stellantis grew 4.5% and Toyota Group 1.7%. Hyundai and most other domestic makers declined.

What it means

Both EV makers are growing off a weak base while combustion models shrink, which is the pattern investors in European automakers are weighing against tariffs and Chinese price competition. We have not read share-price moves for Tesla or BYD today, so we do not report one. Whether September's jump is a trend or a quarter-end push will show up in October's data.

The number behind the number

The 10.2% headline is a one-month figure for a wider region, the EU, UK and EFTA together, while the market shares quoted (36.3% for hybrids, 22.7% for battery-electric) are year-to-date. Mixing the two is the easiest way to misread the release. ACEA's own calendar lists the headline as a year-to-date figure of 5.7% for September, which means the strong single month is lifting a slower year, not the other way around.

The fall in petrol (down 20.6%) and diesel (down 28%) matters for fleet owners and independent garages as much as for automakers: the cars entering the market need less routine engine work and more electrical and software service. That is a slow shift in the repair trade, and one we track in our stocks coverage only where it moves a listed company.
