GM leaves the NYSE for Nasdaq on Nov. 17, and its stock jumps 4.8%

The 115-year NYSE listing ends November 16. What changes for the automaker is index eligibility, not the ticker or the shares in your account.

General Motors (GM) said Tuesday it will move its common stock from the New York Stock Exchange to the Nasdaq Global Select Market. Trading on Nasdaq is expected to start November 17 under the same "GM" ticker, and the shares stay on the NYSE through the close on November 16, Fox Business reported. Shareholders do not need to do anything, CNBC reported.

In Nasdaq's quote data at 9:51 AM ET, GM traded at $80.01, up $3.70 or 4.8% from Monday's $76.31 close.

Why a carmaker wants a tech exchange

CFO Paul Jacobson called Nasdaq "a natural home" for a company with a "customer-focused, technology-driven strategy." The timing fits: the move comes a week after GM held a technology event on its artificial intelligence and self-driving plans, CNBC noted. GM first listed on the NYSE in 1911 and relisted in 2010 after its government-backed bankruptcy.

The practical prize is the Nasdaq-100. GM said the transfer makes it eligible for possible inclusion in that index. Fox Business adds the caveat that matters: inclusion is not guaranteed. Eligibility is a door, not a seat. Index funds only buy a stock after it is actually added, and nothing in the announcement says when or whether that happens.

What this does and does not change

  • Your shares: nothing. Same ticker, same stock, no paperwork.
  • The business: nothing. The move does not change what GM earns. Its Q3 profit, $20 billion buyback and cautious outlook are in our earnings story.
  • The stock: a possible new pool of index buyers, which is probably what Tuesday's jump is pricing. That is our reading, not something GM or the exchanges have said.

Part of a pattern

CNBC lists Walmart, DoorDash and Palantir as companies that switched from the NYSE to Nasdaq in recent years, and says Hilton Worldwide announced its own move last week. Nasdaq has said companies typically cite index inclusion opportunities, fee structure and investor-relations services as reasons, according to CNBC. For the NYSE, losing a listing dating to 1911 is a symbolic hit.

The numbers behind the stock

CNBC says GM shares have more than doubled since 2024 as the company has aggressively bought back stock, and puts its market value at roughly $64.4 billion at Monday's close. The two-year chart above shows the stock about 11% under its July 28 peak even after today's jump.

Next for GM watchers: November 17, the first Nasdaq session, and any word from Nasdaq on index membership.
