Greenland's parliament approves the US-Denmark security deal 16-0, with 7 abstentions

The agreement paves the way for more US bases and an expanded Pituffik Space Base. Denmark's parliament debates it later this month; the US Senate does not need to vote.

Greenland's parliament on Tuesday approved the security agreement among Greenland, Denmark and the United States by 16 votes to none, with seven lawmakers abstaining, according to Al Jazeera, citing AP. Reuters and AP headlines carry the same result.

What the deal does

Trump, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen signed it in September on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, after months of negotiation and Trump's repeated threats to seize the island. Per Al Jazeera, it paves the way for more US bases and lets the US "modernise and expand" activity at the Pituffik Space Base in the northwest. Greenland stays under Danish control, and the agreement would still apply if the island later chose independence.

What is still pending

The deal enters into force only once the "necessary parliamentary processes of the Kingdom of Denmark, in conjunction with Greenland" are complete. Danish lawmakers are due to debate it later this month, and no US Senate approval is required. Foreign Minister Mute Egede called the vote an important step, saying Greenland "chose dialogue and took responsibility for our country's interests."

What to watch

The text we read does not give contract values, base locations or timelines, so we cannot size any spending, and we make no claim about defense contractors or minerals. Watch the Danish vote and any announced construction plans. More: markets.
