JPMorgan sees bitcoin beating stocks and gold for the next decade: 10% a year vs 7.5% and 5.5%
The bank's 2027 Long-Term Capital Market Assumptions give bitcoin a return range for the first time. Its 10% compound figure tops the other assets reported, yet JPMorgan says bitcoin is not included as an allocation.
J.P. Morgan Asset Management\'s 2027 Long-Term Capital Market Assumptions, its 10-to-15-year return forecasts, include bitcoin for the first time. Outlets covering the release, including Bitcoin.com, TFTC and 24/7 Wall St., report a base-case compound return of 10% a year and annualized volatility of 55%. That is the highest figure in the asset table those reports reproduce. It is a forecast range, not a recommendation, and JPMorgan itself stops short of putting bitcoin in a portfolio.
The numbers, side by side
Figures below are the reported base-case 10-15 year returns. We could read the JPMorgan page text itself, but its exhibits are graphics, so the bitcoin and most comparison figures rest on the secondary reports, which agree with each other.
| Asset | Expected annual return |
|---|---|
| Bitcoin (compound) | 10.0% |
| U.S. REITs | 8.2% |
| U.S. small cap | 7.7% |
| U.S. large cap | 7.5% |
| U.S. high yield | 6.6% |
| Gold | 5.5% |
| U.S. cash | 3.2% |
JPMorgan\'s own page confirms the 7.5% for U.S. large cap, which it describes as an 80 basis point upgrade, and 5.3% for global aggregate bonds. We did not find a U.S. aggregate bond figure we could confirm, so it is left out. The same reports cite a 60/40 portfolio at 7.0%, and Bitcoin.com lists private equity at 9.8%, which means bitcoin leads that table by a narrow margin rather than a wide one.
What 10% a year means in dollars
Some videos are calling this a JPMorgan "$214,000 bitcoin" call. That figure is compounding, not a price target. At 10% a year, bitcoin's roughly $81,400 close on October 20, 2026 would grow to about $211,000 after 10 years; starting from $82,000 it would be about $213,000. JPMorgan's assumptions are long-run annual return estimates, not forecasts of where the price will be on any date, and the 55% volatility means the path there could include very large swings in either direction.
Compound versus arithmetic, and the 55%
The reports give an arithmetic average of 20.9% against the 10% compound figure. The gap is volatility drag: a 55% annualized swing erodes what an investor actually keeps. For comparison, Forkast puts large-cap equity volatility near 18% and Bitcoin.com puts gold at 17.2%. Outlets disagree on the bull and bear scenarios (figures near 17% and between -9.7% and -11.2% were reported), so we do not print them.
What JPMorgan actually said
On its LTCMA page, the bank says: "for the first time, we put a range on bitcoin returns," and "we do not yet include bitcoin in our main covariance matrices." It adds that "the volatility and unstable correlation of assets like bitcoin remain an obstacle" to widespread portfolio inclusion, and that it provides "a separate, smaller covariance matrix with BTC against a subset of assets." Its summary line: "We debut bitcoin coverage, but unstable correlations to other assets impair a strategic allocation." The page gives data as of September 30, 2026.
The dissent, and the read
Bitwise CIO Matt Hougan, according to Bitcoin.com, agrees bitcoin ranks first but argues JPMorgan overstates its volatility and understates its returns. A skeptic can point the other way: bitcoin has a short data history, and a 10% forecast is a base case with a very wide band around it.
The practical read: the 10% is an input, not a signal. Until bitcoin enters the main covariance matrices that drive model portfolios, advisers who follow JPMorgan\'s framework have a number to look at but no allocation to implement. Bitcoin traded near $82,575 on Coinbase at the time of writing, with a 24-hour range of roughly $81,081 to $83,344. Prices and forecasts are different things, and this one covers a decade or more.
