JPMorgan's $266,000 bitcoin number is eight months old and rests on $8 trillion of gold, not $31 trillion

The figure is circulating again as a fresh "3x undervalued" call. The note was written in February, when bitcoin was $65,600, and JPMorgan called it unrealistic for 2026.

A JPMorgan estimate that bitcoin could reach $266,000 is back in circulation this week, framed in videos as a new Wall Street verdict that the coin is three times undervalued. It is not new. The Block reported it on February 5, 2026, and the details matter more than the headline.

What the note actually said

  • The method: bitcoin's volatility relative to gold had fallen to about 1.5, which The Block described as a record low. JPMorgan analysts used that ratio to ask what bitcoin would be worth if its market value matched private-sector gold investment, which they put at roughly $8 trillion, excluding central bank holdings.
  • The horizon: "over the long term." The analysts called $266,000 "unrealistic" for 2026.
  • The price then: bitcoin traded near $65,600 and had fallen below JPMorgan's estimated production cost of about $87,000, which the bank called a "soft price floor."

Where the framing goes wrong

First, the arithmetic of "3x undervalued" is just $266,000 divided by today's price. Coinbase showed bitcoin at about $82,400 on Monday morning, so the gap is 3.2 times. But the comparison was made when bitcoin was 20% lower than it is now; the starting point has already moved about 26% toward the figure without the note changing.

Second, the base is $8 trillion of investable gold, a volatility-adjusted comparison. Videos pairing it with a roughly $31 trillion gold total and a $1.5 million bitcoin are describing a different, much larger calculation that JPMorgan did not make. Nothing in the note supports the larger number.

Third, a bank scenario is not a forecast. It says what bitcoin would be worth if one condition were met, and the note itself says that condition depends on negative sentiment reversing. Bitcoin is still below the $87,000 production-cost level the same analysts cited.

What to take from it

The useful fact is the volatility ratio: bitcoin has become less erratic relative to gold, which is what makes an institutional comparison possible at all. The $266,000 figure is a ceiling-style illustration, eight months old, from a desk that also said not to expect it this year. Check live prices on our crypto prices page.
