Bitcoin holds while alts bleed

The gap between Bitcoin and the rest is the main feature of the tape. Over the past week Bitcoin is down 2.7%, while the other seven coins are down between 7% and 13%. On Coinbase, Bitcoin's 24-hour range was $80,927 to $84,070, so it dipped about 2.1% below where it sits now before recovering. That matches CoinDesk's report of Bitcoin and Ether slipping overnight and then rebounding.

Asia's AI selloff, and what Bitcoin did with it

The overnight trigger was in equities. Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix fell about 7% and 10% in South Korea, CoinDesk reported, after Broadcom CEO Hock Tan likened speculative AI investing to gambling in a casino, as quoted by the Financial Times, and after Bloomberg reported advances in memory-chip technology at China's CXMT.

CoinDesk's separate analysis of the divergence put the 20-day rolling correlation between Bitcoin and the KOSPI at -0.41 on a weekly chart. It cautioned that correlation alone does not establish that money is rotating out of AI stocks and into Bitcoin. We would add that the altcoin table above does not look like a rotation into crypto: most of the market fell too.

South Korea blocks 27 exchanges

South Korea's Financial Intelligence Unit announced Tuesday that it is blocking 27 unregistered crypto exchanges, including BitMart and KuCoin, CoinDesk reported. The regulator said it has referred 44 unregistered operators to investigators, and only 28 virtual asset service providers are currently registered. A KuCoin spokesperson said user assets remain safe. We did not find a source linking the block to today's price moves, and the exchanges involved are offshore venues rather than the large registered Korean platforms.

What traders are watching

  • U.S. CPI on Wednesday. CoinDesk cited a forecast of 3.6% headline inflation year over year, up from 3.4% the previous month, and 2.5% core. See our CPI explainer for business owners.
  • Bank earnings today. JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs and Citigroup report, per CoinDesk.
  • The AI-stock tape, which has been driving overnight risk appetite.
