The $82,500 line held at the weekly close
Bitcoin's weekly candle closed Sunday at around $83,700 on Bitstamp, a 3.2% weekly decline, according to Cointelegraph. The outlet noted the close kept bitcoin above $82,500, the weekly support level traders have been watching, and so avoided a return to the $60,000 to $80,000 range of earlier this year.
On Coinbase's tape, the 24-hour low was $82,929 and the current price is about $751, or 0.9%, above the $82,500 line. The 24-hour high was $84,262, so bitcoin traded in a range of about 1.6%. The seven-day damage is larger in the altcoins than in bitcoin: Ether, Solana, XRP, Dogecoin and Cardano are all down more than 6% on the week against bitcoin's 2.9%.
CPI Wednesday, with a rate hike priced for December
The scheduled risk is inflation. September CPI is due Wednesday and PPI Thursday. Cointelegraph reported that markets expect CPI at 3.7% year over year, up from 3.4% in August, with the Middle East conflict and fuel prices cited as the cause. It also reported, citing CME FedWatch, an 18.8% chance of a Fed hike at the October 28 meeting from the current 3.75% to 4.00% range, and a 70.6% chance of a 25 basis point hike in December.
Treasury yields eased from last week's highs but remain elevated. The 10-year closed Friday at 5.24% and the 30-year at 5.60%, according to the Treasury's daily yield curve. See the 10-year chart for the move. For how the week's data lines up, see our week-ahead calendar.
South Korea gets its first bank loans backed by bitcoin
The one crypto-specific headline of the morning came from Seoul. Jeonbuk Bank, a unit of JB Financial Group, has begun offering won-denominated loans to corporate clients secured by bitcoin, CoinDesk reported, citing local outlets Edaily and Jaekyung Ilbo. Proceeds are limited to business operating costs, only bitcoin is accepted as collateral for now, and the bank does not hold the coins itself: a registered crypto service provider keeps them in custody. A bank official confirmed to Jaekyung Ilbo that one loan has already been made, without naming the borrower. Cointelegraph carried the same report.
It is a single bank and a small product, and we saw no figures on loan size or volume. Bitcoin was up only 0.3% over the past 24 hours, so there is no sign of a price reaction.
