Ledger confirms a tampered device
The biggest crypto headline over the weekend was security, not price. Cointelegraph reported that Ledger said in a Sunday post on X that one affected user's device contained an unauthorized hardware implant. The device was bought from CryptoBilis, a reseller Ledger had authorized in Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines. An investigator named Specter estimated losses could exceed $86 million across Bitcoin, Ethereum and Tron. Ledger has not confirmed that figure or how many customers are affected.
Ledger told Cointelegraph the incident appears isolated to that one reseller and its market, and that its own infrastructure and services were not compromised. CryptoBilis said it has stopped selling all hardware wallet inventory until the investigation concludes. Ledger advised anyone who bought a device from the reseller and has not set it up to hold off, and anyone who has to consider moving assets to a new signer with a new recovery phrase. The investigation is ongoing.
XRP Ledger bug, patched before disclosure
CoinDesk reported Friday that a flaw believed to date to 2015 in the XRP Ledger's built-in exchange could have let an attacker create spendable XRP without paying for it, breaking the fixed 100 billion supply. RippleX reproduced the attack on a standalone server and said it found no evidence of exploitation on any public network. The fix shipped in xrpld 3.4.1 on September 25 without a description of what it repaired. XRP is down 0.5% over 24 hours and 6.1% over the week on our numbers. We did not see a source tying the weekly decline to this disclosure, and the patch predates it by two weeks.
What the market structure looks like
This weekend marks a year since the October 10, 2025 liquidation, when more than $19 billion in leveraged positions were wiped out in a day. A CoinDesk Research analysis found Bitcoin's order book within 1% of the price held about $11.7 million on October 7, roughly 75% more than on crash day, while altcoin depth at 5% from the price is down about a third since the start of 2025. It also noted that Bitcoin's 1% depth fell about 12% between October 7 and October 8 as the market sold off. Weekly spot volume averaged around $279 billion in the four weeks to September 27, nearly two-thirds below the crash week.
We looked for a specific cause behind Cardano's 3.0% drop over 24 hours and did not find one in the CoinDesk and Cointelegraph coverage we read.
What traders are watching
- Ledger's follow-up, including any confirmed loss figure and how many devices are involved.
- The CFTC's two event-contract proposals, filed Friday with 30-day comment windows, per Cointelegraph.
- Monday's open, since weekend liquidity is thin and moves can look larger or smaller than they are once U.S. markets are back.
