Bitcoin at $83,245, Ether at $2,505: crypto prices today, October 9, 2026

A $1 billion flush, then a rebound on Iran

Thursday was the rough part. Coinbase shows bitcoin's low over the last 24 hours at $80,315, about 3.5% below the current price. Cointelegraph reported that the sell-off triggered $1.09 billion of liquidations in the 24 hours to 10 am UTC Friday, citing CoinGlass, the largest daily tally since August 21. Long positions made up $1.05 billion of it. The article said the drop followed reports of the U.S. government moving more than 12,000 BTC it had previously confiscated, and that transfers like that can fuel sales. It did not say any sale had happened.

The bounce came after a Truth Social post from President Trump on Thursday saying the U.S. would not attack Iran before the November 3 midterm elections, CoinDesk reported. Brent crude slipped about 1% to around $103 a barrel, and Nasdaq 100 futures were up 0.83% and S&P 500 futures 0.44% since midnight UTC, per the same report. CoinDesk's daybook noted that Brent hitting a two-week high a day earlier had fed inflation worries that pushed the Fed minutes toward another rate increase, so lower oil takes some pressure off.

Who sold, and what the chart level is

On-chain data cited by Cointelegraph from CryptoQuant showed short-term holders, meaning coins held up to six months, sent 55,600 BTC to exchanges at a loss on Thursday. Moving coins to an exchange often signals an intent to sell, but not every coin sent is sold. CryptoQuant's contributor noted that such loss-driven selling has at times coincided with short-term capitulation. That is a historical observation, not a forecast.

The technical levels in play: CoinDesk quoted FxPro analyst Alex Kuptsikevich saying Thursday's low touched the 50-day moving average, where buyers stepped in. Cointelegraph quoted analyst Rekt Capital saying bitcoin is retesting about $82,500 and that a weekly close below it would put bitcoin back in its prior accumulation range. Bitcoin is about $745, or 0.9%, above that level on our numbers, so the weekly close will say a lot. These are analysts' scenarios, not predictions.

Weaker side of the tape

The CoinDesk 100 was still 2.2% lower over 24 hours at the time of writing, with DeFi tokens down nearly 4%, CoinDesk reported. U.S.-listed bitcoin, ether and zcash ETFs posted outflows Thursday, leaving XRP funds as the only crypto products taking in money. CoinDesk also noted that Ethereum Foundation researcher Justin Drake's call for a "bunker mode" added to negative sentiment, and that Coinbase cryptographer Yehuda Lindell called the concerns "FUD", saying there was no evidence the elliptic-curve assumptions behind bitcoin and ether had been broken. We looked for a specific reason behind Cardano's 3.1% drop and Dogecoin's 2.3% drop and did not find one in the CoinDesk and Cointelegraph coverage we read.

What traders are watching

  • The weekly close relative to the $82,500 level analysts are tracking.
  • Oil and the Iran headlines, which drove both the dip and the rebound this week. See the crude oil chart.
  • ETF flows, after Thursday's outflows in bitcoin and ether funds.
  • Seized-coin transfers, and whether any show up as sales.
