ETF money turned the wrong way
U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded net outflows of $487.1 million on Wednesday, the most since June 25, according to SoSoValue data cited by CoinDesk. CoinDesk's own analysis put that about 2.1 standard deviations below the average daily flow of the past 90 days, which has been roughly $92 million of inflows. After about $2.65 billion of net inflows in September, October is down $165.6 million so far.
Context matters here: the funds have still taken in a net $717 million this year and $57.33 billion since they launched in January 2024, per the same data. One bad day does not undo that, but the August and September rally leaned on fund buying, and that bid has gone choppy.
Bonds, oil and the level traders are watching
The pressure is again coming from rates. The 10-year Treasury closed Wednesday at 5.28% and the 30-year at 5.67%, according to the Treasury's daily yield curve. CoinDesk, citing CNBC, put the 30-year at 5.71% and the 10-year at 5.32% in early trading, ahead of a $22 billion 30-year auction later Thursday. Minutes of the Fed's September meeting showed all 19 officials backed last month's rate increase, with most seeing another as likely appropriate by year-end, CoinDesk reported. September CPI is due October 14 and the Fed meets October 28.
Bitcoin dipped to about $82,300 overnight, roughly 4% below Tuesday's high near $86,600, per CoinDesk. The price floor analysts cite is the 50-day average at about $80,550, which is $1,716, or 2.1%, below the current price on our numbers. FxPro's Alex Kuptsikevich told CoinDesk the $80.5K to $81.5K zone holds last month's local highs, and that a break could lead toward $76,000 or the 200-day average near $72,000, while a bounce there could bring a retest of the highs. That is one analyst's scenario, not a forecast. On the upside, $87,000 is about 5.8% above where bitcoin trades now.
Other items on the tape
- Seized bitcoin on the move. The U.S. government moved 9,261 BTC, about $770 million, to Coinbase Prime over two days, Cointelegraph reported, citing Galaxy Research. Galaxy said about half came from the Bitfinex hack recovery and 2,456 BTC came from previously unknown holdings. Cointelegraph noted a sale would conflict with the March 2025 executive order placing seized bitcoin in the Strategic Bitcoin Reserve, and that it had asked the Marshals and the Justice Department for comment. No sale has been reported.
- "Bunker mode" debate. Ethereum Foundation researcher Justin Drake urged the industry to plan for a possible AI-driven break of wallet cryptography, and Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin said the risk deserves attention but holders should not scramble, CoinDesk reported. Tokens marketed as quantum-resistant, such as Algorand, rose; we cannot say how much of any move came from the post.
- Geopolitics. CoinDesk's daybook linked the oil jump to a report that the White House asked the Pentagon for strike options against Iran. We did not independently confirm that report.
We looked for a specific reason behind the bigger drops in XRP and Avalanche and did not find one in the coverage we read.
