JPMorgan brings its JPM Coin deposit token to Ethereum, for approved institutions only

The largest US bank is extending its dollar deposit token from Coinbase's Base network to Ethereum itself. It is not a stablecoin and it is not open to the public.

JPMorgan Chase is bringing JPM Coin to Ethereum, according to a CoinDesk report that cites Bloomberg and a matching Cointelegraph report. JPM Coin is a token that represents US dollar deposits held at the bank. Until now the public-chain version ran on Base, the Ethereum layer-2 network built by Coinbase.

What was announced

Emma Landriault, global head of Kinexys Labs, JPMorgan's blockchain unit, told Bloomberg the bank chose Ethereum for its liquidity and because institutional clients already use it. As relayed by the two crypto outlets, she described two uses: crypto companies making blockchain payments, and financial firms settling trades or posting collateral against tokenized assets.

CoinDesk reports the move goes beyond JPMorgan's private Kinexys network, which it says processes more than $7 billion in transactions a day. Cointelegraph adds the history: JPM Coin launched on Base in November 2025, JPMorgan said then that it planned to support more public blockchains, and in January it announced plans to bring the token to the Canton Network. Ethereum is the next step in that sequence, not a change of direction.

What it is, and what it is not

The headline can be misread. A deposit token is a digital record of money that sits in a bank account at the issuer. A stablecoin such as USDC is a separate instrument issued by a separate company. Cointelegraph notes that although the token is issued on public networks, JPM Coin stays restricted to approved institutional participants. A retail wallet cannot hold it, and an anonymous address cannot receive it.

So this is a bank extending its settlement rails onto a public chain, with the bank still deciding who is allowed on. For anyone expecting a new asset to trade, there is none: no new coin, no supply schedule and no yield to speak of in the reports we read.

Who it touches, and who it does not

The people affected are treasury teams at crypto exchanges, market makers and tokenization desks that already hold dollars at JPMorgan and need to move them at 2 a.m. on a Sunday, when wire systems are closed. Cointelegraph describes the token as letting eligible clients move funds within seconds, around the clock. For a business owner with a checking account and a card terminal, nothing changes today. If tokenized settlement does spread, the first benefit would show up as faster movement of money between large institutions, long before it reached a payroll run or a vendor payment.

The price angle

Ether traded at about $2,407 on Coinbase at 9:50 a.m. New York time, up about 0.7% from the day's $2,393 open, in a 24-hour range of $2,325 to $2,444. We could not tie that move to this report, and a bank token that cannot be bought by the public does not obviously create demand for Ether itself. What it does show is a large US bank choosing the public Ethereum network as infrastructure. Whether that shows up in network activity is something the data will have to show; neither report quantifies it.

What we could not confirm: JPMorgan's own release, the launch date, which clients are live and any volume figures. The Bloomberg original sits behind a paywall and we relied on the two outlets' accounts of it.
