Kenyan cult leader Paul Mackenzie gets 200 years for Shakahola starvation killings

A Mombasa High Court judge declined the death penalty and imposed two 100-year terms to run consecutively over the deaths of 191 people, 190 of them children.

Kenyan cult leader Paul Nthenge Mackenzie was sentenced on Friday, November 6, to an aggregate 200 years in prison over the Shakahola Forest deaths, according to The Star and other Kenyan outlets. Justice Diana Kavedza handed down the sentence.

How the sentence is built

The court imposed 100 years for murder by starvation and a further 100 years for murder by direct homicide involving child victims. Terms within each category run concurrently, while the two categories run one after the other, producing the 200-year total. Prosecutors had asked for the death penalty. The Star reports the judge declined, saying the court "declines the invitation to impose the death penalty."

Outlets differ on the exact number of counts in each category, and the figures reported do not line up cleanly with the death toll. We are therefore not printing a count. The headline numbers that match across reports are the 200-year aggregate and the 191 deaths, 190 of them children.

Background

Mackenzie, founder of Good News International Church, was found guilty in October along with roughly 30 co-accused. Prosecutors said followers were told to starve themselves to meet God. He denied forcing anyone to starve. Reports say co-accused received varying terms depending on their roles, but we could not confirm those figures from a primary source. His lawyer has said he was instructed to appeal, and Mackenzie faces separate cases, including over deaths at Kwa Binzaro village, where he has pleaded not guilty.

Investigators have recovered more than 400 bodies from the forest in total, according to earlier coverage, a figure larger than the number covered by this verdict.

What the structure means

Because the terms inside each category run concurrently, the 200 years is not the sum of every count. It is two 100-year terms stacked end to end. In practice the number is symbolic: no one serves 200 years. What matters legally is that the court chose consecutive terms for two distinct kinds of killing, starvation and direct homicide, and rejected the prosecution's call for capital punishment. Any appeal will likely test both the convictions and the way the terms were combined.

The verdict that preceded it

The guilty verdict came in the third week of October. Africanews reported that relatives of victims welcomed it. The court rejected Mackenzie's argument that he did not compel the victims to starve. Sentencing was set for November 6, and the court followed that schedule.

What to watch

Expect an appeal and further hearings in the separate cases. The sentence will not change markets, but it closes the main criminal case in one of the deadliest cult tragedies on record.
