MongoDB falls 21% as CEO CJ Desai leaves for Meta; filing shows he gave notice four days before Investor Day
Desai told MongoDB on Thursday he was going. The company announced it Monday, reaffirmed guidance, and still holds its Investor Day on Tuesday, now led by returning chief Dev Ittycheria.
MongoDB shares fell about 21% at Monday's open after the database company said chief executive CJ Desai is leaving to join Meta Platforms, less than a year after he took the job. The stock was at $325.93 at 9:52 a.m. ET, down $84.51 from Friday's $410.44 close, and touched $300 in the first minutes of trading, according to Nasdaq.com. Meta fell about 4%.
At Meta, Desai becomes chief enterprise platform officer, reporting directly to Mark Zuckerberg and running a new unit called Meta Enterprise Platform, the company said in a release. MongoDB named Dev Ittycheria, who ran the company from 2014 to November 2025, as interim president and CEO, CNBC reported and the company confirmed.
What the filing adds
MongoDB's Form 8-K puts dates on the handover that the press release does not:
- Thursday, Sept. 24: Desai notified MongoDB he intended to resign, effective Monday. The filing says the decision was not due to any disagreement with the company.
- Saturday, Sept. 26: the board appointed Ittycheria as interim CEO.
- Monday, Sept. 28: the news went out, before the open.
- Tuesday, Sept. 29: MongoDB's Investor Day at Nasdaq MarketSite goes ahead, from 11 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. ET, according to the press release.
So the executive who was meant to present the long-term plan tomorrow is gone, and the plan will be presented by his predecessor. The filing also shows Ittycheria has been a partner and senior advisor at Sequoia Capital since this month and is lead independent director at Datadog. He keeps his board seat, and his advisory agreement with MongoDB from October 2025 stays in force. The board has hired a search firm for a permanent CEO.
The business did not change overnight
MongoDB reaffirmed its third-quarter and full-year fiscal 2027 guidance from Sept. 1. That guidance followed a quarter in which revenue rose 30% to $771.8 million, non-GAAP operating margin reached 24% against 15% a year earlier, and free cash flow was $137.6 million, according to the company's results release. It was Desai who said then that the results gave "high confidence" in durable growth.
Nasdaq.com put MongoDB's market value at about $26.3 billion at Monday's price, which implies roughly $6.8 billion was erased at the open (our calculation from the price drop and the implied share count). That is the market pricing leadership risk and the question of why a CEO leaves a company growing 30% after ten months, not a change in the numbers.
Meta's pitch hits the enterprise software names
Meta says the new unit will start by selling its Muse agent, Meta Business Agent, Muse API and Muse Code to companies and developers. Zuckerberg's release notes Desai spent nearly eight years at ServiceNow, including as president and COO, before running product and engineering at Cloudflare. ServiceNow was down 4.3% and Salesforce 3.8% in early trade, per Nasdaq.com. Meta's consumer Muse launch has already moved stocks well beyond tech; we covered it in Meta jumps 11% on Muse.
What traders will watch: whether Tuesday's Investor Day repeats the long-term targets or softens them, whether any other senior MongoDB executives follow Desai, and what Meta says about pricing for businesses.
