Oil falls 13% in a week on election hopes, but analysts see 80% odds Iran fighting resumes

December WTI closed Friday at $90.83, down from $104.12 a week earlier, as traders priced a Democratic Congress ending the Iran war. RBC and Rapidan Energy say the Gulf is moving the other way.

Oil has priced in peace that the Gulf has not delivered. December WTI settled at $90.83 on Friday, down 12.8% from $104.12 a week earlier, according to daily closes from Yahoo Finance. CNBC reported that the slide followed the Democratic sweep in Tuesday's midterms and Vice President JD Vance publicly blaming the Republican losses on the war. In the same report, analysts say the U.S. and Iran are heading toward renewed fighting.

The week in prices

DateDecember WTI close
Fri Oct 30$104.12
Mon Nov 2$96.46
Tue Nov 3$96.09
Wed Nov 4$88.12
Thu Nov 5$90.52
Fri Nov 6$90.83

Most of the drop came in two sessions: Monday (down $7.66) and Wednesday, the day after the election (down $7.97). Since then WTI has recovered about $2.70 from its low. CNBC put the move in crude at more than 16% over five sessions and said Brent traded above $97 on Friday with U.S. crude near $90. We quote the December WTI contract because it is the active one; the 16% figure is CNBC's.

What the analysts are saying

CNBC quoted Helima Croft, head of global commodity strategy at RBC Capital Markets, who wrote on Friday that she was struck by "the divergence between deepening escalation concerns in the Gulf and the headline-driven off-ramp optimism of market participants thousands of miles away." Rapidan Energy puts the chance that fighting resumes at 80%, and its president, Bob McNally, told CNBC that crude would "vault above $100 a barrel again" if it does. Those are their estimates, not facts about what will happen.

The political argument for calm is real but slow. Democrats plan to push a war powers resolution, yet CNBC notes they are not sworn in until January. President Trump said Thursday he would decide soon whether to strike Iran again: "You'll know soon enough."

What is happening on the water

The same day, Central Command said it disabled a St. Kitts-flagged ship that tried to leave after visiting an Iranian port; our earlier report has the details. CNBC added that Iranian state media reported explosions on Qeshm Island and at the port of Jask, which CNBC could not confirm, and that several tankers have been attacked near Oman since the election, killing one seafarer according to maritime security agencies. It also reports that a third U.S. carrier strike group is heading to the region. Separately, AP's Iran coverage carries a headline saying the Revolutionary Guard claims a self-imposed limit on its ballistic missile range "has been lifted". We have not seen the underlying text, so treat it as an Iranian claim. The U.S. is also reported to be weighing limits on Iranian land trade, covered in our Task Force Iron Gate story.

What it means for oil, shipping and travelers

  • Oil: December WTI is $13 below where it stood a week ago. A move back above $100 would erase the whole election-week drop; the market has not priced that in at $90.83.
  • Shipping and insurance: attacks on tankers near Oman are the cost that does not fall with crude. Voyage risk premiums respond to incidents, not to Washington's calendar.
  • Airlines: jet fuel follows crude, so a rebound above $100 would raise carriers' costs and could push up fares; airspace closures near the Gulf are a separate risk.
  • Defense stocks: the carrier deployment and the strike threats are the factors to watch, not the election result.
  • Consumers: pump prices follow crude with a lag of days to weeks, so the decline of the past week may not have fully reached gas stations before the next move.
