Quaker Oats' Cedar Rapids plant, the world's largest oat mill, hit by explosion and fire: no injuries

An explosion and fire broke out Saturday at the Iowa plant that processes more than 2 million pounds of oats a day. All workers were accounted for. The cause and any impact on production are not known.

An explosion and fire hit the Quaker Oats plant in downtown Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on Saturday afternoon, sending thick black smoke over the city. No injuries were reported and all plant workers were accounted for, according to Fox Business and The Gazette of Cedar Rapids. AP and ABC News carried the same basic account of the incident.

What officials have said

  • Timeline: the Gazette, citing a Cedar Rapids Fire Department news release, says police and fire crews were dispatched at about 4:45 p.m. to the back of the building in the 400 block of Second Street SW. They found heavy smoke and flames on the north side of the building, along with evidence of an explosion.
  • Containment: by 5:55 p.m. the fire was considered under control but not necessarily out. At 6:25 p.m. the department said crews were finishing final work inside the building.
  • People: all plant workers were accounted for as of 5:30 p.m., and no firefighters were hurt. Mayor Tiffany O\'Donnell said the blast was in a part of the plant "where people fortunately typically aren\'t," an area where product moves back and forth.
  • Help: crews from Marion, Hiawatha and Linn County, plus Area Ambulance Service, assisted.
  • Company: a PepsiCo Foods US spokesperson, whose company owns Quaker, said how the fire started "will be investigated" and thanked first responders.

Why this plant matters

Quaker\'s own website describes the Cedar Rapids facility as the largest milling facility in the world, processing over 2 million pounds of oats a day, as both Fox Business and the Gazette note. That scale is why the incident drew national attention. It is a single site, and it is not the only place oats are processed, but the sources we read give no figure for how much of Quaker\'s output it accounts for, so we will not guess.

What we do not know

  • The cause. Authorities have not said what caused the explosion. We are not speculating, and neither should readers on social media.
  • The damage. The Gazette says the extent of the damage and the impact on production are unclear.
  • Supply. Neither PepsiCo nor local officials had announced a shutdown, a restart date, or any effect on shipments in the reports we read. If you buy Quaker products in bulk, such as a bakery, cafe or grocer, the practical step is to ask your distributor whether any orders are affected rather than assume a shortage. No shortage has been announced.

What to watch

The next facts to look for are the fire department\'s and any state or federal investigators\' findings on the cause, a PepsiCo statement on production, and whether the plant\'s roughly 2-million-pound daily output is interrupted. We will update if officials or the company confirm any of them. For wider context on how food and consumer-staple companies are being priced, see our markets page.
