Rural Alaska diesel hits a record $7.97 and may be near $9, with village power plants burning it

The state's survey puts rural gasoline at $7.56 and diesel at a record $7.97, with single villages far higher. For a shop, lodge or fishing operation, the fuel line is now a survival number.

Rural Alaska is paying the most for fuel in its recorded survey history. The average price of No. 1 diesel, used for heating and in many village generators, reached a record $7.97 a gallon in August, according to the state's Division of Community and Regional Affairs survey of 100 communities, reported by KYUK and the Alaska Beacon. That is up 23% from January.

What is measured and what is estimated

Some headlines say gasoline is above $8 and diesel near $9. The survey does not quite say that. The July rural gasoline average was $7.56, up 14% from January. The "near $9" diesel figure is an estimate in the report: U.S. diesel went from $4.58 on July 6 to $6.20 on October 5, and rural Alaska ran 44% above the national average in July, so prices may now be near $9. It is not a survey result. A new survey is due in January 2027.

Individual villages are far above the averages. The survey found gasoline at $14.50 in Kokhanok, $13 in Hughes, $12.50 in Grayling and $12 in Arctic Village. In Noatak, KTUU reported, gasoline jumped from $17.75 to $24.49 on July 2 and diesel was $10.33, with all fuel arriving by air.

Why it hits electricity

KTUU reports 191 Alaska communities run standalone microgrids on local diesel powerhouses. Off-grid electricity can cost $1.00 to $1.50 per kilowatt-hour, against about 20 to 21 cents in Southcentral cities. Lawmakers added $11 million, a 20% increase, to the Power Cost Equalization payout that subsidizes rural residential rates, and federal LIHEAP funding doubled. The cause, per the reports, is the Iran war: rural Alaska normally buys Asian fuel, and at least one supplier switched to Gulf of Mexico product, adding shipping cost.

The Main Street arithmetic

These volumes are illustrations; use your own bills.

  • A village store or lodge heating with 5,000 gallons a year: $39,850 at $7.97, $45,000 at $9. That $5,150 gap is $429 a month. Every 10 cents is $500 a year.
  • A fishing or guide operation burning 8,000 gallons of diesel: $63,760 at $7.97 and $72,000 at $9, an $8,240 swing before any freight on parts and supplies.
  • A shop on a diesel microgrid using 2,000 kWh a month: $24,000 to $36,000 a year at $1.00 to $1.50, against about $4,900 at 20 cents. The reported PCE subsidy is for residential rates, so ask your utility what, if anything, applies to a business account.

What to do

Ask your supplier when your community's tank was last filled and at what price, because delivered fuel is often locked in for months. Build a fuel and freight line into winter pricing now, since a mid-winter emergency flight can cost far more: KTUU cites diesel flown in at up to $30 a gallon. Check weekly U.S. numbers on the EIA page; the national price was $6.276 on October 19, and the rural premium tends to follow it.
