Solana's Alpenglow goes live October 21, aiming for 150 ms finality, with SOL at $104, down 5% on the week

The consensus rewrite cuts finality from about 12.8 seconds to a targeted 150 milliseconds. Users do nothing, and the price has not moved ahead of it.

Solana's biggest protocol change in years is scheduled for Wednesday, October 21. According to the Solana project's Alpenglow page, the upgrade activates in epoch 1064, which starts at roughly 15:00 UTC that day. The stated goal is transaction finality of about 150 milliseconds, against about 12.8 seconds under the current TowerBFT design.

What changes

Finality is the point at which the network treats a transaction as settled and cannot reverse it. Solana already shows a transaction within a fraction of a second, but the settled guarantee takes much longer. Alpenglow replaces the voting system:

  • A block finalizes in one round if at least 80% of stake votes for it. That is the fast path.
  • Otherwise a second round with a 60% threshold decides whether the block is finalized or skipped.
  • The design tolerates 20% adversarial stake plus 20% offline stake. TowerBFT needs more than two-thirds of stake to confirm.

The 150 ms figure is an expectation, not a guarantee. The project's own page says it is lower when a block finalizes in one round than in two. Rollout is staged: the feature switches on at the epoch start, TowerBFT keeps running for the first 5,000 slots, and Alpenglow consensus takes over at slot 459,653,000. Secondary reports cited slightly different start times (14:50 versus 15:00 UTC), so treat the hour as approximate.

For users and developers: nothing about signing, sending or approving a transaction changes, according to the same page.

Why finality matters for business

A payment or a tokenized-stock trade that can only be called final after many seconds forces merchants and brokers to wait or to take risk. Sub-second finality is the pitch for card-like checkout and for markets that settle instantly. That is why it is relevant to recent Solana news we covered, including tokenized US stocks on Solana and the Samsung Wallet USDC rollout. Faster finality is a technical condition for those uses, not proof of demand for them.

The price so far

Coinbase data pulled this morning shows SOL at $104.03, down 1.5% from the 24-hour open of $105.61. Against the daily close of $109.99 a week ago, it is down about 5.4%. Whatever the market thinks of the upgrade, it was not bidding SOL up into it. An upgrade of this size can also carry execution risk, since it is a change to live consensus.
