Standard Chartered plans digital-asset custody in Singapore by year-end, but has not said which coins

The bank announced on October 8 that it will offer custody to institutions and accredited corporate clients, pending regulatory approval. Videos called it bitcoin custody; the bank has not named bitcoin.

Standard Chartered said on Thursday, October 8, that it plans to launch digital-asset custody in Singapore, according to Cointelegraph, which cited the bank's press release. Several bitcoin videos summarized the news as the bank launching bitcoin custody. The announcement is narrower: it covers "select cryptocurrencies, stablecoins and tokenized real-world assets," and no specific coin has been named.

What the bank said

  • Who: institutional clients and corporate clients that qualify as accredited investors. Ordinary retail customers are not included.
  • What: custody, meaning safekeeping of assets, across select cryptocurrencies, stablecoins and tokenized real-world assets.
  • When: the bank has aimed for a launch before the end of 2026, according to coverage of remarks by its digital-assets head. No firm date was given.
  • Condition: the service is subject to applicable regulatory requirements in Singapore.

Cointelegraph asked the bank which cryptocurrencies would be supported and had not received an answer when it published. Until the bank says, bitcoin and ether are plausible but unconfirmed.

Where this fits

Singapore would join a list of places where the bank already operates or is building crypto services. Cointelegraph notes it already offers custody in the United Arab Emirates, Luxembourg and Hong Kong, announced in May that it would take over Zodia Custody's custody business and spin out Zodia Solutions, and launched spot bitcoin and ether trading in the UAE in September. It signed a banking agreement with CoinMENA in June.

Custody matters because large institutions generally will not hold digital assets unless a regulated bank or trust company safeguards them. Each additional bank-grade custodian lowers a practical barrier for funds, treasuries and corporates that want exposure. It does not by itself create buying. A custody service is plumbing: it makes holding possible, and the demand has to come from clients.

What to watch

Three things would turn this from an announcement into a market factor: Singapore regulatory approval, the list of supported assets, and the first named clients. The timing coincides with Token2049, the large crypto conference in Singapore, where bank and exchange announcements have clustered this week.
