Super Micro says quarterly revenue will beat its own forecast by about $4 billion

The server maker pre-announced $18.5 to $19.5 billion for the September quarter against its $14.5 to $15.5 billion guidance, with a wider margin. The numbers are unaudited, and the full report is on November 3.

Super Micro Computer said after the close on Tuesday that revenue for its fiscal first quarter, which ended September 30, will land between $18.5 billion and $19.5 billion. Its own guidance had been $14.5 billion to $15.5 billion. In the Form 8-K filed on SEC EDGAR, the company attributes the gap "primarily" to increased demand for AI platforms. Bloomberg, WSJ and MarketWatch all ran the news on Tuesday evening.

The number behind the number

Two ranges were given, revenue and gross margin, and both beat. Multiplying them out (our arithmetic, not the company's) shows how much of the surprise reaches profit:

GuidancePreliminary
Revenue$14.5B to $15.5B$18.5B to $19.5B
Gross margin10.4% to 10.8%12.0% to 12.5%
Implied gross profit, midpointsabout $1.59Babout $2.33B

Midpoint revenue of $19.0 billion is about 27% above the $15.0 billion guided midpoint. Because margin also rose, the midpoint gross profit of roughly $2.33 billion is about 46% above the roughly $1.59 billion implied by the guidance. The company attributes the margin to "customer and product mix", not to price increases.

Margin context matters: even 12.5% is thin for a hardware business. Supermicro's business is assembling large AI server systems around other companies' chips, so a quarter can swing by billions on when a few large orders ship.

The market reaction

Super Micro closed Tuesday at $32.47, up 1.15%. In after-hours trading it was at $37.23 at 6:51 PM ET, up 14.7%, according to Nasdaq.com. Its market value at the close was about $21.3 billion, with a 52-week range of $19.48 to $56.60. Dell Technologies, which closed at $462.01, traded at $487.81 after hours (up 5.6%), and Hewlett Packard Enterprise, which closed at $56.12, traded at $58.65 (up 4.5%). Those are after-hours prints on thinner volume and can change by the open.

What it does not say

  • It is preliminary. The company says its auditors have not reviewed the figures and that final results "may differ materially".
  • Revenue is not cash. The release gives no earnings per share, no operating cash flow and no backlog figure, so we cannot say how much of the quarter was profitable or paid for.
  • Customer concentration. The company's risk factors note that targeting larger customers can make its customer base more concentrated and its sales less predictable.

What to watch

The full results and call are on Tuesday, November 3, at 5:00 p.m. ET. Until then the open questions are the margin trend against the 10.4% to 10.8% it guided, and whether the company gives the next quarter's guidance a similar step up.
