Magnitude 7.0 earthquake hits Tibet: USGS flags 111,000 people in strong shaking, orange economic alert

The quake struck the Tibetan Plateau at 10:33 AM Eastern on Thursday, in a sparsely populated area. Here is what the US Geological Survey has confirmed so far, and what is still unknown.

A magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck the Tibetan Plateau in central China on Thursday, according to the US Geological Survey. Bloomberg and Reuters both carried the report within hours. USGS puts the epicenter 191 km east-northeast of Nagqu, at about 32.4 degrees north and 93.8 degrees east, at a depth of 18 km. The origin time was 14:33 UTC, which is 10:33 PM local time in China and 10:33 AM Eastern.

What USGS says about the shaking

USGS's automated impact model, PAGER, estimates that about 111,000 people felt moderate to severe shaking, on a scale that runs from MMI V (moderate) to MMI VIII (severe). The highest intensity it estimates is MMI VIII. The agency says shaking impacts are likely, some fatalities are possible, and the disaster is potentially widespread.

The model carries two alert levels. Fatalities are rated yellow, meaning some casualties are possible. Economic losses are rated orange, which USGS describes as significant damage being likely, with losses estimated at under 1% of China's GDP. USGS notes that past events at that level have needed a regional or national response.

The fault mechanism is normal faulting, which USGS says fits the east-west stretching of the plateau. It also warns that aftershocks, some potentially strong, may follow. USGS recorded a magnitude 5.2 aftershock about 201 km east-northeast of Nagqu later the same day.

Why a 7.0 here is not automatically a disaster

USGS stresses that this part of the plateau is sparsely populated, so damage depends on how close the rupture sits to towns. The agency's own history shows the range: a magnitude 6.9 quake on April 13, 2010, about 272 km from this one, killed more than 2,500 people. USGS also says buildings in this region are often adobe block or unreinforced brick with mud, which are vulnerable to shaking.

What we do not know yet

We have not read a confirmed casualty count or damage report from Chinese authorities, and we are not repeating any figure we cannot trace to one. USGS's PAGER estimates are modeled, not counts, and they are revised as more data arrives. We also found no confirmed effect on markets, shipping or supply chains in the sources we read. That could change if roads, power or rail are reported damaged.

What to watch

  • Official updates from China's earthquake authorities and state media, and any revision of the USGS PAGER alert levels on the event page.
  • Aftershocks, which USGS says can bring strong shaking in the days after a quake of this size.
  • Anyone with family or business ties in the region should rely on official channels for news rather than social media clips, which often circulate from older quakes.

We will update this story if confirmed casualty or damage figures are published.
