Viral post says Circle minted $1.5 billion of USDC on Solana. Supply there is flat at $6.8 billion

A "money printer is back" post spread on October 22. We could not verify the mint transactions, and DefiLlama's daily data shows USDC on Solana was $6.80 billion on Oct. 19 and $6.82 billion on Oct. 23.

Bar chart of daily USDC supply on Solana from October 16 to October 23, 2026, ranging between 6.80 and 7.06 billion dollars

A post that circulated on October 22 said Circle "minted $1,500,000,000 USDC on Solana" in 24 hours and that "the money printer is back." The claim is the kind that gets shared fast. The supply data says something much less dramatic: USDC on Solana ended the stretch almost where it started.

What we could and could not verify

We found the claim as a repost of a single social media post on KuCoin\'s news feed. We found no Circle statement and no wire report of that amount, and we could not independently confirm the individual mint transactions this evening, so we are not stating that $1.5 billion was minted. Whale Alert-style trackers have for more than a year reported mints of $250 million at the USDC Treasury on Solana, so large single mints on the chain are normal. Whether a cluster of them added up to $1.5 billion in one day is the unconfirmed part.

Anyone can check the mint transactions themselves on a Solana explorer such as Solscan, by looking at mint transactions on the USDC token contract.

What the supply data shows

A mint adds tokens. It is not the same as supply growing, because tokens are also redeemed and moved to other chains. The net figure is what matters, and DefiLlama\'s USDC data gives it for Solana:

Date (UTC)USDC on Solana
Oct. 16$6.97 billion
Oct. 17$7.00 billion
Oct. 18$6.89 billion
Oct. 19$6.80 billion
Oct. 20$6.88 billion
Oct. 21$6.98 billion
Oct. 22$7.06 billion
Oct. 23 (partial day)$6.82 billion

From Oct. 19 to Oct. 22 supply rose about $256 million, then gave back about $242 million on the partial Oct. 23 reading. Across the whole eight-day window it stayed between $6.80 billion and $7.06 billion. A true $1.5 billion net increase would have been visible as a jump of more than 20% in a stablecoin that size. It is not there.

Total USDC across all chains tells the same story: about $72.66 billion on Oct. 22 and $72.25 billion on the Oct. 23 reading, a dip, not a surge.

Why a mint is not money printing

Circle issues USDC only when a customer sends it dollars, and says USDC is fully backed by cash and short-term U.S. Treasuries held in reserve. A mint therefore records a deposit coming in. It does not create value from nothing. Redemptions run the other way: tokens are sent back and burned, and the dollars go out. Large mints on one chain are also often just a stablecoin moving between chains, or exchanges and market makers stocking up on a chain where traders are active.

That is why a single large mint, even a verified one, is a weak signal on its own. It tells you where demand for dollars on-chain showed up for a moment. It does not say the total supply of dollars grew by that amount.

One caution on the numbers

Different trackers measure "USDC on Solana" differently. Reading the token\'s supply directly from Solana\'s public RPC this evening returned about $7.90 billion, higher than DefiLlama\'s $6.82 billion. We have not established the reason for the gap, so we use DefiLlama for the day-to-day trend and would not compare levels across sources. We only have a daily series from DefiLlama, so the flat-supply finding rests on that source.

What traders should take from it

  • Check net supply, not gross mints, before reading a mint as a bullish signal.
  • Treat a viral post as a lead. The number is only as good as the transaction behind it.
  • Stablecoin flows matter most when they persist over weeks, which the daily chart above does not show for Solana this week.
