Rays vs. Brewers: a first-time World Series champion is guaranteed, and Game 1 is tonight at 8
Two small-market, low-payroll teams meet at American Family Field, with a payroll-cap fight over the next labor deal in the background. Full schedule and how to watch.
The World Series opens tonight, Friday, October 23, with the Tampa Bay Rays at the Milwaukee Brewers. First pitch is 8 p.m. ET on Fox, according to CBS Sports. Neither franchise has ever won a title, so whoever wins will be a first-time champion.
How they got here
Per CBS Sports, the Brewers swept the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NLCS and are in their first World Series since 1982. The Rays beat the Cleveland Guardians in six games in the ALCS, finishing with a Junior Caminero home run in Game 6. It is their third World Series, and first since 2020; they lost in 2008 to the Phillies.

The money story underneath
CBS Sports columnist Dayn Perry points out that this is a hard matchup for the owners' argument in the current labor talks. He writes that MLB is pushing for a payroll cap, and that the players' union has rejected every proposal tied to one. The two finalists rank 19th (Brewers) and 28th (Rays) in 40-man roster payroll, and 30th and 14th in market size. By his count, that adds up to the lowest combined payroll ranking for any World Series on record and the smallest combined market since the Cardinals and Royals in 1985.
The same piece notes both clubs are, on balance, revenue-sharing recipients and that low payrolls reflect owner choices as well as market size. We are reporting Perry's analysis and rankings as his; the payroll figures themselves come from CBS Sports.
What the matchup looks like on the field
MLB.com's Mike Petriello writes that the Rays are, by his Statcast measure, the best team since tracking began in 2015 at turning hard-hit balls (95 mph or faster off the bat) into outs, while the Brewers are hard to defend because they can win with contact, speed or power. CBS Sports reports that Rays left-hander Shane McClanahan, out since early September with forearm soreness, is not expected to pitch in the series.
Practical notes
- Games 1 and 2 are in Milwaukee, Games 3 to 5 in Tampa Bay; a Game 6 or 7 returns to Milwaukee.
- Prices for resale tickets move by the hour and vary by platform. Use the team's official ticket pages rather than third-party links in messages.
- If lines are mentioned elsewhere, they are the sportsbooks' own. 21+. 1-800-GAMBLER.
