Building materials supplier directory: editorial methodology
The editorial method we use, and that you can reuse, to build a building-materials supplier directory: inclusion rules, evidence required, dating, and what we will not publish.
A trustworthy building-materials supplier directory is built from dated, checkable evidence, not from self-descriptions or ratings. This page sets out the editorial method: what gets included, what evidence is required, how entries are dated and what is deliberately left out. You can also apply it to a private shortlist.
Principles
- Evidence over adjectives. An entry states what the supplier publishes about itself, with the source and the date it was read. It does not call anyone "leading" or "trusted".
- No invented facts. If something cannot be found on an official source, the field stays empty or reads "not stated".
- No fabricated reviews or ratings. A directory should not display ratings unless they come from a documented, real process that the page explains.
- Disclosure. Any relationship between the publisher and a supplier is stated plainly. Sponsored items are labelled as such.
- Dated and revisable. Every check carries a date. Entries are re-read on a schedule and corrected when a supplier points out an error.
Inclusion criteria
- The supplier has an official website or registered business presence we can read.
- It states what it makes or sells, in which regions, and how to contact it.
- It publishes at least one current technical document per product line (datasheet, installation guide or test report).
- Where it claims a certification or a test result, the claim names the standard and the issuer.
A supplier that meets these is eligible for an entry. Meeting them is not a recommendation.
Fields and evidence
| Field | Evidence accepted | If missing |
|---|---|---|
| Legal name and location | Supplier site, company registry in its country | "Not stated" |
| Product categories | Supplier catalogue pages | Leave blank |
| Markets served | Supplier statement | "Confirm with supplier" |
| Standards and certificates | Certificate number plus the issuing body's own record | "Claim not verified" |
| Technical documents | Link to supplier-hosted file, with date read | "None found" |
| Minimum order, lead time, price | Only if published; otherwise ask via RFQ | "Request a quotation" |
Prices are never estimated. If a figure is shown it must carry its basis and date, with a note to confirm on the official site.
What we will not publish
- Rankings, "top ten" lists or star scores without a described method.
- Statements that a product is code compliant or structurally suitable. That decision belongs to the engineer of record and the local authority.
- Claims about a competitor beyond what the competitor publicly states.
- Personal data about individuals at suppliers beyond business contact details they publish.
How to use a directory entry
Treat an entry as a lead, not as a conclusion. Take the supplier into the due diligence checklist, score it with the research scorecard, and request pricing through a written RFQ (how to write one). Category-specific starting points are in the steel framing and modular construction directory methods.
Corrections and updates
Suppliers and readers may point out errors. A correction is checked against the same evidence rules, applied, and dated. Entries that can no longer be verified are removed rather than left to age. If a sponsor such as Digital Oro International appears anywhere in this site, the page says what its official site states and when it was read, and nothing more.
Questions people ask
Does this page list suppliers?
No. It sets out the method for building and reading a supplier directory. It contains no supplier records.
Do suppliers pay to be included?
This page makes no claim about paid listings. Any future listing must disclose its basis clearly, and sponsored content must be labelled.
How are claims verified?
By checking the supplier's own publications and the issuing bodies for standards and certificates, and dating each check.
Can I use this method for my own shortlist?
Yes. It is written so a developer or consultant can apply it to a private shortlist.
