Steel framing supplier comparison directory

A research method for comparing steel framing suppliers: what to collect, how to normalise it, and which questions separate a component maker from a full framing package.

To compare steel framing suppliers fairly, first sort them by what they actually deliver (raw components, cut-to-length kits, engineered panels or trusses, or a full framing package), then collect the same dated evidence from each. This page is a method and a checklist. It does not name or rank suppliers.

Step 1: Classify the offer

Offer typeWhat you receiveWhat stays with you
Component supplyStuds, tracks, clips, fasteners, by length or coilDesign, cutting, assembly, quality control
Cut and labelled kitComponents cut to a layout, with marksAssembly, site coordination
Panelized framingAssembled wall or floor panelsErection, connections, design responsibility unless agreed
Trusses and joistsEngineered roof or floor membersBracing, installation
Framing packageDesign coordination plus supply, sometimes installationWhatever the contract excludes

Background on the systems themselves is in light gauge steel framing for developers and the component guide. Comparing a coil seller to a package supplier on price alone is the most common mistake.

Step 2: Collect the same facts from each

Step 3: Normalise the quotes

Put quotations into one grid using the same drawings and the same delivery point. The framing package quote comparison template and how to compare supplier quotations show how. Convert prices to a landed basis with delivered versus factory price, and compare per square metre only after scope is aligned (normalising price per square metre).

Step 4: Questions that expose real differences

  1. Who is the designer of the framing, and who holds responsibility for it? Ask for the answer in writing.
  2. Which design standard does the supplier design to, and is that the one your authority accepts? Confirm with the engineer of record and the local authority.
  3. How are members labelled, and how will the labels match the drawings?
  4. What is the process for a damaged or short delivery? See the receiving checklist.
  5. What changes after design freeze, and how are they priced? See design freeze.
  6. Can the supplier provide reference documents, such as test reports for its fasteners and connectors?

Step 5: Verify before shortlisting

Any certification or test claim should be checked with the issuer, as in checking a product certification claim. Standards and guidance bodies such as CFSEI, AISC, ASTM and ICC are where you read what a standard says. Then run the due diligence checklist and the scorecard.

Record outcomes with date and source. Our general approach to dated, evidence-based listing is explained in the editorial methodology.

Questions people ask

Does this page list steel framing suppliers?

No. It is a methodology and research checklist. It does not contain supplier records.

What is the first thing to compare?

Scope. Some suppliers sell studs and tracks only, others deliver engineered, labelled panels or trusses. Compare like with like.

Which standards matter for cold-formed steel?

Relevant standards bodies include CFSEI, AISC, ASTM and ICC. Which ones apply to your project is a question for the engineer of record and local authority.

How many suppliers should I compare?

Three or more that pass your due-diligence screen is a common approach.
