Checking a product certification claim
To check a certification claim, find the certificate, confirm the issuer is competent, match the product and scope, check it is current, and verify it with the issuer directly.
A certification claim is checkable. Find the actual certificate, confirm who issued it and whether that body is accredited, match the certificate to your exact product and the standard it names, check the dates, and verify the certificate directly with the issuer. Brochure logos and phrases like "certified quality" are starting points for questions, not proof.
Step 1: get the certificate, not the logo
Ask the supplier for the full certificate with its number, issue date, expiry or review date, the certified entity and the certified product or system. A certificate is a document with a defined scope; a logo is only a symbol.
Step 2: who issued it
Identify the certification body. Product certification bodies are commonly assessed against ISO/IEC 17065, and management system certifiers against ISO/IEC 17021. Check whether the body holds accreditation from a national accreditation body that is part of the international arrangements (ILAC and IAF publish member information), and that the accreditation scope covers the certification in question. Absence of accreditation does not prove a claim false, but it lowers the assurance.
Step 3: what exactly is certified
| Check | Common gap |
|---|---|
| Certified entity and site | Certificate covers one plant, product made elsewhere |
| Product, model or range | Covers a family, not your variant |
| Standard and edition | An older edition or a different standard from your specification |
| Type of certificate | Quality management system is not product performance |
| Conditions or limits | Applies only for certain uses or sizes |
An ISO 9001 certificate, for example, concerns a management system; it does not say that every product meets a given performance standard.
Step 4: dates and status
Confirm the certificate is in date and not suspended or withdrawn. Certificates are typically subject to periodic surveillance, so a very old document may no longer be valid.
Step 5: verify independently
- Look up the certificate in the issuer public directory if one exists.
- Otherwise email the issuer using contact details you find yourself, not those printed on the document.
- Ask them to confirm the number, holder, scope and status.
- Save the reply with the file.
Step 6: relate it to your project
Whether a certified product is acceptable for your building depends on your design and the local code. Ask the engineer of record and the local authority what evidence they accept. Related evidence types are explained in reading a material test report and reading an EPD.
Warning signs
- Certificate holder name differs from the seller, with no explanation.
- No number, or a number that the issuer cannot confirm.
- Scope text that is vague or does not mention your product.
- The issuer cannot be found or has no contact route.
- Pressure to skip verification.
Build these checks into your supplier screening with the due diligence checklist and keep the verified files as described in organizing product documentation.
Questions people ask
What is the quickest check?
Ask for the certificate number and verify it in the certification body official database or by contacting them directly.
What is the difference between certified and tested?
Testing reports a result on a sample. Certification by a third party usually involves ongoing assessment, such as factory surveillance. The exact scope is on the certificate.
Does a logo on a brochure prove certification?
No. Logos can be misused or out of date. Verify the certificate itself.
Does certification mean it meets my local code?
Not automatically. Check the standard certified to and ask the engineer of record and the local authority whether it is acceptable for your project.
