Reading an environmental product declaration
An environmental product declaration reports a product life-cycle impacts in a standard format. Read the product scope, declared unit, life-cycle stages, verifier and validity before you compare two EPDs.
An environmental product declaration (EPD) is a verified report of a product environmental impacts over its life cycle, written to a common format so that results can be understood and, with care, compared. Reading one well means looking past the headline figure to what it measures, for which product, and how it was verified.
What an EPD is and is not
An EPD is built on a life-cycle assessment and governed by rules in international standards (ISO 14025 for the declaration framework; EN 15804 is widely used for construction products). It reports impacts such as global warming potential, resource use and waste. It is a disclosure, not a certification of performance, and it carries no pass mark.
Reading order
- Who and what. Check the manufacturer, product name, plants covered and whether it is product-specific or an industry-average declaration.
- Program operator and verification. Note the program, registration number, issue and expiry dates and the verifier. Confirm the entry on the program operator website.
- Declared unit. Impacts are reported per a unit such as one square meter at a given thickness, or one kilogram. This is the base for any comparison.
- System boundary. See which life-cycle stages are included (often labelled A1 to A3 for production, further stages for construction, use and end of life, and module D for benefits beyond the system).
- Results table. Read the indicators per stage, not only the total.
- Scenarios and assumptions. Transport distances, service life and end-of-life assumptions can shift results.
- Data quality and geography. Check where the data comes from and the region it represents.
When two EPDs can be compared
| Check | Needed for comparison |
|---|---|
| Declared or functional unit | Same, or converted by a clearly shown method |
| Product category rules | Same or compatible set and version |
| Life-cycle stages included | Same modules compared |
| Product performance | Equivalent function, for example the same insulation resistance |
| Validity | Both in date |
A common mistake is comparing impacts per kilogram of two materials that perform differently per square meter of wall. Convert to the function the building needs.
Cautions
- A company-declared "EPD" that is not verified or listed by a program operator carries less weight. Ask for the registered document.
- An EPD for a product family may not represent the exact variant you are buying.
- Impact numbers depend on methodology versions; avoid mixing results across methods.
- Do not read an EPD as evidence of structural, fire or durability performance. Those are covered by other documents; see reading a material test report and checking a certification claim.
Where it appears in procurement
EPDs may be requested by owners, lenders or green building programs. Add them to your submittal list (materials submittal checklist) and file them with other product records (documentation guide). If a rating system or authority requires specific documents, confirm the requirement with that body directly.
Questions people ask
What is an EPD?
A standardized, verified document reporting life-cycle environmental impacts of a product, based on rules such as ISO 14025 and, for construction products, EN 15804.
Can I compare two EPDs directly?
Only if they use the same declared unit, the same life-cycle stages, compatible product category rules and similar data quality. Otherwise the numbers are not like-for-like.
Does an EPD mean a product is green?
No. An EPD reports impacts; it does not set a threshold or say the product is good or bad.
How long is an EPD valid?
Each EPD states its own validity period, commonly several years. Check the dates on the document and the program operator listing.
