Galvanization

Galvanization is the process of coating steel with zinc so the zinc corrodes first and protects the steel underneath.

Galvanization is the process of coating steel with zinc so the zinc corrodes first and protects the steel underneath.

Definition

Galvanization applies a layer of zinc to steel or iron to protect it from rusting. Zinc forms a barrier and also acts sacrificially, meaning it corrodes in preference to the steel when the coating is scratched.

A plain example

Cold-formed steel studs are commonly supplied with a zinc coating applied on the coil in a continuous process, while large fabricated steel members may be dipped in molten zinc after fabrication. The coating designation is shown on the product data.

Why it matters

Steel inside a wall is hidden for decades. A zinc coating gives it a first line of defence against moisture, though how much coating is needed depends on exposure. Designers specify a coating designation, and the buyer should check it on the mill documents.

Common confusion

Galvanized does not mean rustproof forever. Cut edges, damaged areas and wet or aggressive conditions all wear down the coating. It is also one form of corrosion protection among several, not the only one.

On a project

Read the coating designation on the product data and the mill documents, and compare them with the specification. For cut or drilled steel, ask what touch-up the manufacturer recommends.

Quick answers

  • How does zinc protect steel? It forms a barrier and, if scratched, corrodes first so the steel is protected locally.
  • Is galvanized steel maintenance-free? No. Performance depends on coating, exposure and damage.
  • Where do I check the coating? On the product data sheet and the mill test report. Match it to the specification.

Related terms

Always check the project drawings and specification, and confirm requirements with the engineer of record and the local authority.
