Corrosion protection

Corrosion protection is the set of coatings, materials and design details used to keep metal from degrading in its service environment.

Corrosion protection is the set of coatings, materials and design details used to keep metal from degrading in its service environment.

Definition

Corrosion protection covers anything that slows the rusting or degradation of metal: zinc coatings, paint systems, stainless alloys, sealing of edges, and design choices that keep water away from steel.

A plain example

A steel stud wall in a dry interior may need only its factory zinc coating. A steel member near the coast, in a damp space or in contact with other metals may call for a heavier coating, a paint system, or isolation between dissimilar metals.

Why it matters

Corrosion cuts the section of a member and can loosen connections, so the right level of protection is part of durability. The designer should select it from the environment and expected life, not from habit.

Common confusion

Corrosion protection is broader than galvanization. Galvanizing is one method, and the best result often combines coating with good detailing, drainage and compatible fasteners. Also, protection chosen for one exposure may not suit another.

On a project

Start from the exposure: indoor dry, damp, coastal or industrial. Then ask the designer which coating or alloy is required and whether fasteners and adjacent metals are compatible.

Quick answers

  • Is galvanizing the only corrosion protection? No. Paint, alloys, detailing and moisture control also play a part.
  • What affects the level needed? Exposure, moisture, nearby materials, and expected service life.
  • Who sets the requirement? The designer, with the specification. Confirm with the engineer of record.

Always check the project drawings and specification, and confirm requirements with the engineer of record and the local authority.
