Galvanized steel coil buying guide
Galvanized steel coil is the raw feed for studs, panels and flashing. Buy by base thickness, coating mass, grade, width and coil weight, and read the mill certificate.
Galvanized steel coil is flat sheet wound in rolls that fabricators roll-form, press or slit into studs, tracks, panels and flashing. If you buy coil directly, specify base metal thickness, steel grade, coating designation, width, inner diameter, coil weight and surface treatment, and request the mill certificate for each lot.
Terms you will meet
| Term | Meaning | Why to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Base metal thickness | Steel thickness without coating | Quotes may state nominal total thickness instead |
| Coating designation | Zinc or zinc alloy mass on the surface | Controls corrosion life |
| Grade | Mechanical properties, such as yield strength | Matches the product being formed |
| Slit coil | Master coil cut to narrower widths | Tolerance and edge condition |
| Skin pass or temper | Surface and flatness treatment | Affects forming and finish |
| Passivation or oil | Surface treatment against storage staining | Compatible with later painting or laminating |
Standards such as those from ASTM define coated sheet specifications; ask the mill which one the product follows.
Who actually buys coil
Coil is a fabricator's purchase. A project buyer usually sees it indirectly, through a framing or panel supplier's assumptions. If you are supplying coil to a subcontractor, write down who owns losses, who is liable for off-spec material, and who pays for testing.
Quote comparison
- Price per tonne or per unit length, and what is included (slitting, packaging, freight).
- Thickness tolerance range, not just nominal.
- Coating designation with the standard named.
- Coil weight and diameter limits for your line.
- Lead time, and whether it is mill-direct or from a service center.
Inspection on arrival
- Match coil tags to the mill certificate.
- Check for edge damage, rust spots, white corrosion and telescoping.
- Measure width and thickness at a few points against tolerance.
- Photograph damage before unloading continues.
Storage
Store coil dry, indoors if possible, on cradles that prevent edge deformation. Wet storage allows white rust to develop between wraps, particularly on tightly wound coils.
Common mistakes
- Confusing total thickness with base metal thickness.
- Buying coating by name only.
- Skipping the mill certificate and discovering a grade mismatch later.
This guide is general education, not a specification. Project specifications and the engineer of record decide what steel is acceptable.
Questions people ask
What does the coating designation mean?
It describes how much zinc is on the surface. Different systems use different notations, so ask the mill for the designation and the standard it follows.
What is a mill test certificate?
A document from the producer giving chemistry, mechanical properties and coating data for a lot or heat.
Should I buy coil or finished studs?
Coil suits fabricators with rollforming. Most project buyers buy finished framing and let the fabricator manage coil.
What affects yield?
Edge trim, slitting, and handling damage reduce usable material. Include a loss allowance in your plan.
