Steel bracing and straps buying guide

Bracing and straps resist lateral loads and stabilize steel framing. Specify width, thickness, hole pattern and fastening, and confirm the design with the engineer.

Steel bracing and straps keep cold-formed framing straight and carry wind or seismic forces. Because they are designed elements, you buy them by the drawing schedule: width, thickness, steel grade, coating, hole pattern and the specified fastening.

Bridging versus wall bracing

Lateral bridging prevents studs from rolling or twisting during construction and service. Diagonal bracing forms part of the wall's lateral system. They look similar on site but do different jobs, so label which is which when you order and receive.

Specification lines

  • Member type and size from the drawings.
  • Steel thickness and grade, with coating.
  • Hole size and pattern, when pre-punched.
  • Fasteners and number per connection.
  • Length plus any cutting allowance, noting that cutting may be restricted for engineered parts.

Receiving and handling

  1. Compare tags with the order.
  2. Check for kinks and bends in strap coils, which reduce effectiveness.
  3. Store coils flat and dry.
  4. Segregate bridging from structural bracing.

Common mistakes

  • Forgetting end anchorage, which makes a strap decorative.
  • Installing diagonal strap with slack when the design assumes it is taut.
  • Using strap off-cuts across load paths.

Bracing patterns and fastening come from the engineer of record, informed by guidance from groups like CFSEI. This page does not approve any layout.

Questions people ask

What is the difference between a flat strap and a channel brace?

A flat strap acts mainly in tension, while a channel or angle brace resists compression too. The design decides which.

Can I use ordinary banding as strap?

No. Strapping used for bundling is not a framing strap. Use product documented for structural use.

Where do straps attach?

At the stud flanges and at anchors or blocking, per the drawings. Locations are part of the design.

Does strap tension need checking?

Some details specify tight installation. Follow the drawings and manufacturer notes.
