Shop drawing
A shop drawing is a detailed fabrication or installation drawing prepared by a contractor, fabricator or supplier to show exactly how a component will be made and fitted.

What shop drawing means
A shop drawing translates the designer’s intent into the precise information a factory or installer needs: dimensions, member sizes, connection details, hole positions, finishes and tolerances. It is prepared by the party who will make or install the work.
It is usually issued as part of a submittal and reviewed before fabrication begins.
A plain example
A fabricator drawing each prefabricated wall panel shows stud locations, openings, bracing and panel marks. The reviewer checks that it matches the design drawings and the specification. Only after approval does the shop cut and assemble. Any dimensions in a sample are illustrative.
Why it matters
Errors found on paper cost far less than errors found in steel on site. Shop drawing review is also where clashes between trades surface. Late or incomplete drawings delay fabrication and can push a long-lead item out further.
Common confusion
Shop drawings differ from design drawings (which express intent) and from as-built drawings (which record what was actually built). Review comments do not generally replace the engineer of record’s responsibility; confirm roles in the contract and with the local authority.
Practical checklist
Shop drawing review is more effective with a short checklist.
- Confirm the drawing cites the correct design drawing and revision.
- Check that dimensions, member sizes and finishes match the specification.
- Look for interfaces with other trades, such as openings, penetrations and fixings.
- Make sure connection details and tolerances are shown clearly enough for the shop to build from.
- Record review status and comments, and have the fabricator reissue after changes.
