Thermal break
A thermal break is a low-conductivity element placed in an assembly to interrupt the path of heat through a more conductive material.
A thermal break is a low-conductivity element placed in an assembly to interrupt the path of heat through a more conductive material.
Definition
A thermal break is a material or gap with low thermal conductivity that separates two conductive parts, so heat has a much harder time travelling between them. It is used in windows, curtain walls, balconies and framing.
A plain example
In an aluminium window frame, a strip of polymer joins the inner and outer metal sections. Without it the metal would carry cold straight through the frame. With it, the interior side stays closer to room temperature.
Why it matters
Breaks help manage energy loss, reduce condensation risk on cold surfaces, and improve comfort near openings. They are often specified along with continuous insulation so that the envelope performs as a whole.
Common confusion
Thermal breaks do not make a frame warm by themselves, and different products have different performance. Do not read the term as a guarantee: ask for tested data. It is also separate from a fire break or an expansion joint, which serve other purposes.
On a project
On a data sheet, look for the declared break material and the tested whole-product values rather than only a note that a break is present. Check also that the break stays in line with the insulation layer in the wall section.
Quick answers
- Where are thermal breaks commonly used? Metal window and door frames, curtain wall, balcony connections and some wall assemblies.
- Is a thermal break the same as insulation? Not exactly. It is a specific interruption in a conductive path, often a small strip, while insulation fills areas.
- How do I know if a product performs? Ask for tested or rated data and confirm it against the project requirement.
