Hanging drywall: an overview for beginners

Drywall is heavy and the finishing is slow, but the steps are learnable. This page explains the order of work, the finishing stages and the safety points.

Drywall goes up in a day and finishes over several. Planning the board layout and giving the compound time to dry matter more than speed.

Before hanging

  • Frame and services must be complete and inspected where required.
  • Insulation and any vapour control must be in as the design needs.
  • Check the framing is flat, or boards will show it.

Hanging

  1. Hang ceilings first, then walls.
  2. Place boards to minimise joints and stagger the joints.
  3. Fix to the framing using the fasteners and spacing the manufacturer and code state.
  4. Cut outlets and openings carefully after checking position.

Finishing

Embed tape in the joints, then apply thin coats of compound, letting each dry fully. Sand lightly between coats and feather the edges so joints disappear. Prime before painting.

Safety

Lifting heavy boards risks strains, and fine dust is a health hazard. Wear a respirator, eye protection and gloves, and keep dust from the rest of the home. See the painting preparation checklist for the step that follows.

Always check the project drawings and specification, and confirm requirements with the engineer of record and the local authority.

Quick answers

  • What is the hardest part of drywall? Finishing. Hanging goes quickly, but taping and several thin coats of compound with sanding between them take patience.
  • Should I use special board in wet areas? Use products made for the location, such as moisture-resistant board where the manufacturer says, and follow its instructions.
  • Can I hang drywall alone? Boards are heavy and awkward, especially on ceilings. Use a helper or a panel lift.
  • Is the dust harmful? Fine dust irritates lungs and eyes. Wear a respirator and eye protection, and use a damp or HEPA cleanup.
