Light steel frame buyer guides

Hurricane and high-wind design for steel-framed buildings

What high-wind design asks of a steel-framed building: roof uplift, connections, openings and cladding, and which questions to put to the engineer.

High-wind design is about holding the roof and envelope to the building. The frame is one part of a continuous chain that also includes fasteners, foundations, windows, doors and cladding.

The load path

  • Uplift: wind pulls roofs upward, so connections from truss to wall to foundation must resist tension, not only weight.
  • Lateral load: walls need bracing for wind pushing sideways.
  • Openings: windows and doors that fail let pressure inside, raising loads on the roof.

Details to specify

  • Truss-to-wall and wall-to-foundation connectors, with a fastener schedule.
  • Roof sheet fixing pattern and edge zones.
  • Impact or protection ratings for glazing, if the code requires them.
  • Corrosion protection for fasteners in coastal air.

Questions for the engineer

Ask which design wind speed and exposure category were used, and whether the roof cladding you plan to buy is covered by the assumed fixing pattern.

Where Digital Oro fits

Digital Oro International's material catalog lists a light steel frame made of AS1397 G550 AZ150 steel, 0.75 or 0.95 mm, with a zinc-aluminum coating of more than 150 g/m2, offered to Australian and American standards. It also lists wall frames, floor joists, roof trusses and sub-floor systems. See the light steel frame catalog map and the full ten-category catalog. The catalog gives no prices, lead times, stock levels or performance ratings for wind ratings. Anything specific to your project has to come from Digital Oro International in writing, and from your engineer of record. Text Digital Oro on WhatsApp to start that conversation.

Next step

Read steel framing in tropical and coastal climates for the corrosion side of coastal sites.

Questions people ask

What fails first in high wind?

Commonly roofs and openings. Once wind enters, internal pressure adds to the load on walls and roof.

Is a steel frame automatically hurricane-proof?

No. Wind resistance comes from engineered connections, fasteners, cladding and openings acting together.

Does Digital Oro state wind ratings?

Its catalog does not. Ask for engineering and test documentation for your site.

Who sets the design wind speed?

The local code and the engineer of record.
