Receiving and storing light steel framing
How to check, handle and store light steel framing on delivery, and which documents to keep.
Thin coated steel is durable in service but easy to damage on arrival and in storage. This guide covers receiving and storing light steel framing on site.
On delivery
- Check the delivery against the packing list before the driver leaves, and note shortages on the delivery document.
- Check for bent members, crushed ends and damaged coating.
- Photograph damage and record it the same day.
- Check that member marks match the shop drawings.
Storage
- Keep bundles off the ground on level supports.
- Support long members so they cannot bow.
- Cover with a waterproof sheet that lets air move, since trapped moisture can mark coated steel.
- Keep different marks and wall panels labeled and separated.
- Do not stack heavy material on trusses or panels.
Handling
Lift with slings that do not crush members, wear gloves because cut edges are sharp, and follow the supplier's lifting instructions for assembled panels and trusses.
Keep the paperwork
File mill certificates, test reports and delivery documents together. You may need them for inspection.
